Frivolous Friday – Purrfect Cat Photo Backdrops

I caught a neighbor cat posing as I walked past with my camera the other day. I love when that happens. I often take pictures of Joy, an older part Siamese cat and Annie, one of two very different looking teenage kittens. And that’s because these cats play outside for part of the day. There are so many interesting backdrops in the out of doors.

Joy has been posing for me for several years. Annie is another really good subject because she will stop and sit and watch—in other words, pose. Her sister, Mollie, a beautiful Maine coon look-alike is not as accommodating. She’d rather rub against my legs and get petted. Well, I’m not going to turn down a chance to pet an adorable kitten.

Here are some of the cats I’ve met as I venture out for a walk with my camera. I’ll snap a picture of a cat posing just about anywhere, but I really appreciate it when they pose against a nice backdrop or where they have chosen to perch or lounge creates an interesting backdrop.

Thoughts for Thursday – Which Posts Are Your Favorite?

As you may know this is an award-winning blog. Occasionally I’ll enter some of my posts in the Cat Writers Association contest. I’m thinking about doing it again this year. Maybe you can help me decide which posts to enter—posts that would be a good representation of the nature of my blog—a post that particularly interested you, entertained you, or taught you something.

Maybe you prefer some topics or styles over others—do you like the photos, stories about cats, informative pieces, pure entertainment, humor…? Which of my posts do you think are award-worthy? Which ones are memorable?

This photo came to me last night–a delightful way to end a lovely Christmas day–seeing a cat perching in the tree. It only makes sense. Some cats do like to be the center of attention.

Newsday Tuesday – How Many Cats is Too Many?

I collected cats for a while. At one time I had eleven—including a litter of kittens. That’s when I learned that some of us have a limit as to the number of cats we can comfortably and successfully manage.

I had four cats for quite a long time, but have discovered that two is probably the ideal number for me and for the cats I’m taking care of. But there are people who can successfully care for many times that number. Some of them open shelters. Others simply provide adequate space and accommodations for as many cats as come to them. They find a way to care for and love them all.

There’s a man in Santa Barbara, for example, who currently has 26 cats and a spacious cat-friendly home. Take a peek at what he’s done for these formerly homeless cats. https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/i-honestly-prefer-cats-over-humans-how-one-man-adopted-26-cats-140052629.html

Mindful Monday – New Klepto Cat Mystery

Congratulations to me and lucky you, I managed to produce 8 Klepto Cat Mysteries this year. Surprised me! Up until now, I’ve maintained an average of 6 books per year. How I managed to squeeze in two additional books and have a full life in the process is a mystery even to me.

We published the print version of Book 40, Meow and Forever, last week. The Kindle version will be ready soon. Watch for the announcement here and at my facebook page. Here’s the description for Meow and Forever.

Rags becomes a pawn in a most preposterous plot.

Savannah’s on high alert after someone threatens to take Rags. Every stranger becomes a suspect and every encounter causes more uncertainty. Meanwhile Glori, the special-needs cat, settles into the Ivey home nicely. In fact some of her characteristics cause interesting speculation. Could the sweet calico actually be related to Rags? You might have some ideas of your own once you get to know Glori.

Rags is oblivious to his stalker. He just continues being Rags. He puts a lot of energy into welcoming Glori into the family, with a few unexpected calamities. He helps Teddy celebrate his second birthday, and manages to steal the show. He also saves a little boy and is the catalyst that just might mean a better life for the child.

Behind the scenes, Savannah and Detective Craig Sledge work to expose the stalker, but time is running out. How much longer can they keep Rags safe? And what is Glori’s role in all of this?

Wow! Just reading the description gets me excited about this story. It’s one you won’t soon forget.

Frivolous Friday – How To Cuddle a Cat

Do you love sitting with a cat in your lap? There are benefits, you know—beyond the pure enjoyment of the snuggle. There’s scientific evidence that having a cat around is good for your health. But there are other benefits to sitting quietly with a cat in your lap. I mean, you can’t get up to answer the phone; it would disturb the cat. Someone wants your attention? Sorry, you’re busy creating a warm place for the cat. Yeah, no one wants to disturb a sleeping cat. Milk it for all it’s worth.

Our cats, Sophie and Lily, have their cuddle preferences—mostly it is not to. That’s right, they aren’t real snugglers. They will certainly crawl into my lap, but I’ve come to believe it isn’t their desire to honor me or show their love, it’s definitely a selfish decision on the cat’s part. Lily curls up in my lap when I’m wearing my robe first thing in the morning. The robe is fluffy and soft. The only other time Lily will curl up close to me is in bed at night. That’s nice. And when I lay on the couch with a blanket. The blanket is the clincher. In fact when I’m feeling under the weather and decide to take a nap or just need to close my eyes for a few minutes with a blanket, I’ll wake up to find one or even two cats curled up with me. How nice that the cats are there to support me when I need it most. Or is it simply the blanket? Our cats love snuggling on or under cozy blankets. Sophie lays on me while we’re watching TV at night. I do a lot of writing at night—with a tablet on my lap—planning my schedule, writing letters, making notes related to my work, etc. Sophie waits ever so patiently for me to stretch out on the sofa and she immediately joins me. But is it really me that she wants—is she expressing gratitude and adoration? Probably not because if I get up for any reason, I return to find her happily snoozing in my spot. She just wants my spot with or without me.

Does your cat look at you with what seems to be love? Does she rub on you affectionately? It’s so sweet when they do this, but you have to wonder about their mindset. In our household, this “affection” usually means “I want something. I want that cheese you’re putting in that omelet. I want a taste of the egg you’re scrambling or that chicken you’re cooking.” Give it to the cat or put it away and the cat drops you like a hot potato.

Sure we know this about our cats. They’re self-serving and self-absorbed, but maybe that’s one of the things we admire about them. I don’t know about you, but despite or maybe because of my cats’ sometimes snubby behavior, I sure do love those little dickens.

For future reference I did a little research to find the most affectionate cat breeds. There are many lists on many cat-related websites, but the lists are all just a little different. Several of the cats considered affectionate are hairless or have very short hair, like the Cornish Rex, Exotic shorthair, Siamese… Personally I like longhair cats and there are some on the affectionate list as well–Persian shows up on most of them, only in different slots–sometimes fourth or fifth and sometimes ninth or tenth. Also considered to be affectionate are Maine coon cats, the ragdoll, and the Somali.

Wild (and Sometimes Crazy) Wednesday – Kitty Sisters

Lily and Sophie are not actually related. They’re what I’d call accidental sisters—sisters who’ve been forced on each other. Or you can look at it from a more positive point of view and say the universe or magical circumstances have brought them together—that they’ve been blessed to have come together in this home. But do they actually like each other? I have to say that much of the time it seems they’d prefer being the only cat, until someone wants to play.

Lately, Lily (the tabby) and Sophie (the tortie) are full of energy and eager each night to rumble. After dinner, Lily might perch on a chair back waiting for Sophie to walk by. She’ll pounce and the chase is on. Lily chases Sophie down the hall and Sophie chases her back into the living room. There’s a lot of crouching and springing and butt-wiggling and tail swatting. And it seems to all be fun and games for the kitty sisters.

Sometimes they sit close together—usually when waiting for treat time or supper. And sometimes, while sitting close, they get cranky—maybe from waiting. Sophie will give Lily a look and Lily seems to know exactly what it means, so she swishes her tail and puts her ears back. They stare at each other, then one might dive full-bodied into the other one. Or one will raise a paw. The other one will raise a paw. Then it’s a stare-down until one of them walks away or challenges. Who knows what goes through their little heads. All I know is that no one ever bleeds. That’s a good thing.

While these two do not curl up and snuggle together, they do share sun puddles on the living room floor on a nice day. They also share space around the heater on a cold day—one on each side of it.

I think the two cats like having each other around for entertainment purposes. They seem to miss each other if one is spending the day or overnight at the veterinarian, for example. So there seems to be some caring there, but they aren’t particularly close. I see pictures of unrelated cats curled up so closely together that you can’t tell where one cat ends and the other begins. It’s so cute. I’d love to have two cats who will snuggle like that. The closest our any of our cats have come to being snugglers is when our large snowshoe-type boy, Max, and Lily would hide together under the blankets when the gardeners were here. They’d also curl up together on me when I’d lay on the couch—but not exactly together. Max would crawl under the blanket to snuggle with me and Lily would lay exactly on top of him. That was cute.

I miss seeing cats relate so sweetly—even if it wasn’t exactly fur touching fur. I mean out in the open those two cats—Max and Lily—seemed to be strangers.

I’ve decided that Lily and Sophie are more like roommates rather than soul mates. And that’s okay, too—as long as there is some “like” between them. Me? I love them both.

Newsday Tuesday – Your Cat’s Holiday Portrait

Have you been attempting to get a really nice photograph of your cat posing with the Christmas tree or with your favorite angel decoration? It’s not always easy to capture the PURRfect cat image. But can you imagine trying to snap a picture of multiple cats all together in one frame?

A woman in Wales accomplished this impossible feat. She managed to gather all 17 of her pets together for a family portrait.  According to Kathy, the owner of these 8 dogs and 9 cats, the dogs were quite cooperative. As you can imagine, it took some creativity and patience to make sure all of the cats were in the photo frame.

She said she just kept picking up wayward cats and putting them back, chasing them down and returning them to their spot for the photo. Here’s the result of Kathy’s efforts: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-50650955?intlink_from_url=https://www.bbc.com/news/topics/cvjk7vv0w40t/cats&link_location=live-reporting-story

Many of you are shaking your head finding it hard to imagine it’s even possible to photograph 17 cats and dogs together, when you have difficulty getting your one cat to pose, right? I’m always chasing our cats around with my camera, especially this time of year when there are so many fun and colorful backdrops for a cat photo.

So how do you photograph a cat? There are definitely some tricks and techniques. I sat in on a workshop at the Cat Writers Association conference one year with a cat photographer and got some great tips. My favorite was this: go into a room and close the door. It’s best if the cats know you are in there. Set up an interesting backdrop using props perhaps. Make sure the lighting is good. You want to see the color of your cat’s eyes. Photographing a cat in a darkened room results in the cat having large pupils. How much prettier her eyes are when the pupils are mere slivers and you can see the gorgeous color.

So once you have the area ready, open the door and your cat will most likely come in to explore the changes you’ve made to that environment. Have your camera ready because they’re bound to pose whether they know they’re doing it or not.

Here’s a site where you can get additional tips for creating that beautiful Christmas card portrait of your cat. http://www.vetstreet.com/our-pet-experts/5-ways-to-take-great-photos-of-your-cat

And once you’ve made that amazing capture–share it here.

Mindful Monday – You’ll Be Excited About What’s Happening in the Klepto Cat Mystery Factory

I finished another phase of the work on Book 40 of the Klepto Cat Mystery series this weekend and handed it over to the formatter. He has completed the formatting process, the adorable Bernadette Kazmarski cover is ready, and I’m currently proofing the formatted version of the book line-by-line, word-by-word. The next step, publication! Happy Holidays!

The print version of Meow and Forever should be ready for you to purchase by the end of the week. It’s doubtful that Amazon can get it to you before Christmas, though, as they create books these days on demand. You order it and they have to make it before they can send it to you. I’ve noticed it takes longer for them to ship the first copies of a book. By the way, the kindle version should be ready around mid-January.

If you want to give a Klepto Cat Mystery as a gift this holiday season, consider purchasing one or all of the Christmas stories—A Picture Purrfect Christmas, A Christmas to Purr About, and A Very Meowy Christmas. If you hurry, there should still be time for the books to arrive.

I’d write more about my work and my books, but I know you’re waiting for Book 40, so I’d better get back to work.
