Paws Up for Wednesday – What’s Happening in the Cat Mystery Factory?

We’re on the verge of publishing Book 55 of the Klepto Cat Mysteries–within the next two days! Alongside that, I just handed over Book 6 of the Calico Cat Mysteries to the beta readers . Yes, we’re moving right along, bringing a lot of cat fun and mystery into the New Year.

Book 55 takes us on a wild and crazy journey to help a young man who has lost his way. Rags, the klepto cat, becomes Rags, the slayer when he practically single-pawedly takes down a gang of misfit criminals and saves the economy and lifestyle of a community. He stands in for a cat destined to be bumped off and ultimately gives the cat-hit men a whole lot of what for. Then he chases down and catches the target cat—a sweet nursing mother cat—and, for her own good, drags the reluctant kitty to safety. Exciting, huh?

And there’s more. Amidst all the hullaballoo, Rags helps one of the crooks shoot himself instead of shooting Rags’s friends—the good guys. How about that? Such a clever cat. Beta readers were very surprised at the ending. I hope you will be too. I mean, what’s a mystery without a surprise ending?

Meowy Monday – Welcome to the Whitehouse, Willow

Willow, the White House's newest resident, in a photo shared online by Jill BidenAs you probably know by now, there’s a new cat in the White House and she’s not pedigreed or even registered. She’s only two, so she must have been a kitten when Jill Biden first met her during a campaign stop. As the story goes, the grey-and-white striped cat jumped onto the stage with her and evidently made quite an impression.

What took so long from that day for the cat to come to the White House? The public was being told a cat was “waiting in the wings.” That she was being fostered. My guess is that she was being groomed to behave properly and to be comfortable around people. Can you imagine some of the cats you’ve adopted being suddenly dropped into a zoo like must go on in the White House at times?

For some of the cats I’ve had and probably the two I have now, there would be no posing or relaxed demeanor around a bunch of strangers and a lot of eager camera-people. Having said that, Willow must have been a calm and relaxed kitten if she entered a packed hall of people and jumped up onto the stage amidst a probably noisy rally.

Well, I, for one, am happy to see that the White House is home to a cat again. And I enjoyed reading this story about Willow and how she came to be the First Cat. Way to go, Willow.

Feline Fun Friday — Cats of Different Colors and Styles

Cats come in all shapes, sizes, colors, temperaments and that’s just the ordinary pet cat. Look around you and you’ll see small cats, large ones, chunky, sinewy, fluffy, sleek, big eared, folded eared, curly haired, green-eyed, blue-eyed, odd-eyed and many other types of cats.

Do you know how many recognized cat breeds there are? According TICA (The International Cat Association) there are 71, FIFE (Federation Internationale Feline) says 48 and the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) recognizes only 45.

We often introduce a new breed here in this blog. There are certainly a wide variety of them. And there are some I’ve never heard of. Sure, people are still experimenting with cat breeds and still the cat associations will add to their lists, but rarely. In 2018, the CFA added two new breeds, the lykoi, which we have talked about here and the Khao Manee, which I’ve never heard of. How about you? Here’s a site that shows this breed.

https://www.petguide.com/breeds/cat/khao-manee/ As you will see, this breed is new to the US, yet it’s a natural ancient breed called the Diamond eye cat and it originated in Thailand. There are reported to be 11 recognized cat breeds from Thailand.

Paws Up For Wednesday – Your Cat-Obsession Bucket List

Are there cat-related things you’d like to do that you haven’t yet done—especially since you’ve been sidelined from doing much of anything these past few years? What cat activities are on your bucket list? Would you like to visit the big cats on an African safari, own or breed a specific type of cat, get involved in rescuing cats from the street, become a veterinarian, see Cats the play (for the first or the tenth time)?

I’ve done a lot of cat-related things and I’ve had a lot of experiences with cats. High on my memory list is writing the Calico Cat and Klepto Cat Mysteries featuring cats. I’ve photographed a Pallas cat in the Denver Zoo from inside his pen, visited a great cat

sanctuary in the California desert, fostered kittens (on a small scale), I’ve seen Cats the play and the movie—enjoyable, I’ve done a lot of fiction and nonfiction reading about cats (I particularly enjoyed Painting With Cats), I’ve visited many cat shows—delightful—and many cat shelters. I’ve slept in a room with a Savannah (cat) kitten, I’ve visited several cat cafés in various cities and a restaurant in the mountains where cats roam free while you eat. I just missed once meeting the mayor of a city in Alaska—a cat, I’ve rescued cats, and I’ve known many delightful/wonderful cats. I have some great cat artwork—some of them originals, and I’ve done a lot of cat photography. I’ve dressed up like a cat, attended several conferences of the Cat Writers Association and workshops related to cats.

But there’s at least one thing I haven’t done and I would delight in doing it. I’d love to ride the cat train in Japan. Here’s a link to this delightful activity https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20190522-the-cat-who-saved-a-japanese-rail-line And you’ll notice that the stationmaster is a calico. She’s so cute with her conductor hat on.

While researching this morning I found where there’s a new cat preserve in Siberia just for the not-very-well-known Pallas cat. Oooo—oooo, I want to see that, too! If you haven’t met a Pallas cat, which is highly likely, here’s a story that will melt your heart—a very unusual story when it comes to Pallas cats. Don’t miss this story of rescuing a Pallas cat kitten. It’s beautiful and she is beyond adorable. https://www.siberiantimes.com/other/others/news/rescuing-cobalt-eyed-baby-of-the-worlds-fluffiest-cat/

Meowy Monday – If Your Cat Had a Job

There is such a thing as the working cat. You’ve met cats in libraries keeping watch over the books and welcoming patrons, at the nursery providing a little extra help picking out plants, in the pet store, citrus packing factory, bookstore, and more. Cats are also happy to oblige warehouse owners as mousers.

I’ve shared stories here of working cats, cats running for office, cats winning honorary office status, cats on ships and so much more. In fact, I’m writing a mystery around the theme of working cats as we speak. But here’s an adorable article featuring all the types of work our ordinary cats do for us at home. I think you’ll get a chuckle out of it and do a little head-nodding as if to say, “Yes, my Ginger, or Annie, or Gizmo does that.

Just imagine what your cat does around your house on a daily basis. Our cats are yoga instructors, counselors, entertainers, food critics, even security guards. For example, I always know when an Amazon delivery has arrived on our porch because of Olivia’s reaction. She becomes ultra alert, stares at the door, and often leaves the room at a dead run.

If our two cats got jobs what would they be? For Sophie, our classy elder cat, maybe she’d enjoy lolling around each day in a dress shop, in a furniture store—demonstrating the products, or she might work in a cat-food factory as a tasting master.

Olivia already works as my muse for the Calico Cat Mysteries and my office assistant. But if she were to seek work elsewhere it might be as a toll-taker. She loves watching cars and big trucks roll past the house through the windows.

If you like the concept of the working cat, watch for Book 6 of the Calico Cat Mysteries, scheduled for publication around the first of March. No worries—a new Klepto Cat Mystery is coming in the first part of February and it’s a doozy. Here’s the link to a fun article n how our cats earn their keep at home.

Feline Friday Fun – Your Cat’s Favorite Toys

Are your cats as fickle about their toys as Olivia is? She love-love-loves a toy, then she doesn’t. She becomes so excited about a toy that she plays with it all the time and manages to lose it under furniture, in sofa cushions, etc. So you buy her more. Soon, however, her fascination for that toy is over and she never plays with it again.

She has no interest in what were Lily’s favorite toys—tiny stuffed animals. Lily even had a little toy veterinarian, which she wasn’t actually crazy about. Her favorites were her baby opossum, her stuffed moose from Alaska, and a snuggly little lambie.

Sophie likes small soft toys and fuzzy mouse toys with tails. She wrestles with the soft toys and she tosses the mice up in the air by the tails then pounces of them—yes, at 17 and a half years old.

Olivia loves toys she can carry in her mouth and those that skitter and scoot all over the wood floors. She skitters and scoots after them with great joy.

Neither cat will curl up in a warm cat bed, but they both like the cubbies in their cat condo and they can often be found inside their nylon tube sleeping or just hanging out.

Do your cats have special toys they just adore playing with? Do they covet something of yours—jewelry or your key chain or your pens or pencils, for example? Are they fickle when it comes to favorite toys? I guess that’s their way of keeping us on our toes.

Paws Up for Wednesday – When Cats Hold Your UPS Delivery Hostage

Cats love boxes. Bring them a gift in a box and they’ll opt for the box as the gift. Most cats are eager to watch you open your deliveries. At our house Olivia and Sophie will practically sniff the tape off a package, then sit guard over it until we finally open it. No, they aren’t eager to see what’s inside, they’re eager to get inside and take command of the coveted empty box.

Olivia has actually put two and two together and came up with the fact that there’s a reason to like the UPS and Amazon delivery trucks. Instead of run to the back of the house when one pulls up, she runs to the window with excitement. But a group of cats in British Columbia have taken their adoration for deliveries even further. They have made claim to the item that was inside the box to the point that they’re keeping their people from using the new Vitamix that came inside.

The three household cats take turns holding the box (with the Vitamix in it, mind you) hostage. They’ve hijacked it, deemed it their own, and they don’t seem willing to give it up. It’s a cute story with pictures. Enjoy:

Meowy Monday – The Life of an Indoor/Outdoor Cat

Litter boxes used to be for emergencies only and for a cat’s overnight needs. Few people kept their cats inside all the time. Cats were meant to frolic out of doors in the grass, among the tulips, taking in sunshine and communing with the birds. I must say I don’t recall many birds visiting our yard when we had indoor/outdoor cats.

We had small children, so it was practically impossible to keep cats that wanted to be outside inside. Kids open doors. That’s what kids do—and they leave doors open. With three children under four, how does anyone have time to make sure the cat’s inside along with the toddlers. Besides, keeping a cat indoors with three active toddlers would probably be considered cruelty to animals.

Fast forward many years and the loss of some lovely cats to the dangers lurking out of doors, we have totally indoor cats now. I do enjoy visits from the outdoor cats that still roam, but the dangers are still real—maybe even more perilous.

Here in our community last week a spunky black cat that was left outside over night, met up with a cougar around 2 am. It was recorded on one of those cameras everyone has to identify porch pirates and watch the goings ons with the wild life. The cat survived to tell the tale the next day and to request he be allowed to sleep at the foot of his human’s bed from now on at night.

The encounter was so close that when the cat went up a tree to avoid the cougar, the big cat went up after him. According to the video, the two of them sat in the tree together for a good while.

Folks, if you must let your cats out—if they demand that you do (yes, I’ve had a couple of cats like that)—please make sure they come in at night–a time when anything bad can happen under a shroud of darkness.
