I notice that sales are up for my two Christmas stories. There’s still time to order copies of A Picture-Purrfect Christmas and A Christmas to Purr About. Order autographed copies here: http://www.KleptoCatMysteries or place an order at Amazon.com.

In A Picture-Purrfect Christmas, Rags performs a Christmas miracle. This is the spellbinding story of love, hope, and a child’s innocent Christmas dreams. It’s one of those feel-good holiday stories you’ll want to read over and over again.

A Christmas to Purr About is intense and touching. In this book, we witness a reunion to beat all reunions and a beautiful Christmas wish come true. Read the reviews at Amazon.com for these two books. They’re two of the most cherished in my collection of 32 Klepto Cat Mysteries.

Spoiler alert—keep a box of tissues nearby when you read these books. They WILL touch your heart.

Frivolous Friday – What Kind of Cat is That?

Oh my, what have they done to the cat? Do you remember the sweet-looking applehead Siamese cat? And the Persian with a pretty face and a real cat nose? Now there are the more Egyptian-looking Siamese—long and lean and the flat-face Persian with breathing and health problems.

Breeders have become creative in coming up with new breeds—some of which are mutations such as the short-legged munchkin and the odd-ear Scottish fold and, oh my, the levkoy, which is hairless and has strangely folded ears.

While some of these unusual cats have come into their own quite by accident, several were manmade or at least helped along by man (or woman). The rex, for example, is another mutation that people ran with in the 1950s. The LaPerm came into being in the 1980s and eh Selkirk in 1987. The hairless Sphinx wasn’t around until around 1960. And the Oriental shorthair was a work in progress until 1977. Believe it or not, the American curl is a natural breed discovered in 1981.

So while cats have been around for over 12,000 years, there certainly are a lot of new cat-kids on the block. I thought you might enjoy seeing some of the most unique cat breeds out there: https://iheartcats.com/the-10-most-unique-looking-cat-breeds/

Wild (and Sometimes Crazy) Wednesday – The Cat at the Window

I find it charming to see a cat at the window as I’m walking or driving past a home or a business. And I guess others do, too, as this is a scene artists paint, photographers shoot, and you see a lot on Christmas cards.

So why do cats pose at windows? Most likely they aren’t actually posing. Their curiosity has gotten the best of them. The cat has already made her rounds inside and now she wants to check out the bigger world. Cats are nosey. They want to know what’s going on. They sometimes behave like spies—secretly spying on people and other animals.

One study says that indoor cats spend an average of two hours a day looking out the windows. And did you know that even indoor-outdoor cats enjoy window-watching. Here’s a link sharing the psychology behind why cats spend time at the windows. And it gives some ideas for providing interesting views outside for your cats. For example, put up bird feeders. We do that for our pleasure as well as entertainment for our cats. But I hadn’t thought of installing a light outside their favorite window to attract moths at night. Our cats love to watch moths. On a hot night, they spend quite a bit of time at the screen door watching the moths gather around our porch light. Here’s a link explaining the psychology behind cats at windows.

https://www.companionanimalpsychology.com/2012/05/cat-at-window.html

Not only do cats like to watch the wildlife outside the windows, but they’ll wait on the windowsill or on the back of the sofa waiting for you to arrive home, especially if it’s near their meal time.

Does your cat have adequate space to hang out at his favorite window? When we noticed that one of our cats liked looking out a particular window in our home and that the windowsill was too narrow for his large body, we built a little kitty shelf where he could sit more comfortably. All of our subsequent cats have enjoyed that perch, as well. There are also readymade window perches for cats—some are quite cozy-looking. Here’s a link to a variety of them.

Newsday Tuesday – Cats on Display

I was all set to make this post about the cat show circuit and cats bred for show, but while I was conducting the research, something else caught my attention. I came across this title: “Ten Psychological Reasons Internet Cats Are so Popular,” and I couldn’t resist. That’s something I’ve wondered about for years. And it’s something that makes me happy—happy. I love the idea that cats are coming out all over the Internet as cute, funny, adorable, sweet, interesting creatures, and that they’re capturing the interest of millions of people. I have a dream that this will spark the desire in thousands more people to adopt one or more cats and/or to jump on the bandwagon and help rescue those that have been abandoned and forgotten.

This article does more than explain why cat videos are so popular, it gives us a fascinating peek into the human-cat relationship. I’ve read a lot of articles on the topic, but this one touches on concepts I haven’t seen explored. For example, it goes into why cats are so difficult to train—presenting some ideas I haven’t considered; why they do some of the things they do—sit in front of the TV, for example, get up on the counter over and over and over again even when we’ve done everything to deter them; and what some of their gestures actually mean. Read this post if you dare. You might begin to look at your cat in an entirely different light.

Mindful Monday – True to Life Klepto Cats

Just so you know, my klepto cat stories aren’t actually as fictitious as you might think. While I may not be depicting a particular cat involved in a specific incident, my cat tales are truly and charmingly realistic. Yes, Virginia, there are cats who steal things. I have one and I’ve heard of others, but I’ve never seen as many little kleptos until a friend shared a video with me. I’m sorry that I couldn’t find a link so I could share it with you.

In that video, I watched a cat take money from a purse, pull an item of clothing under a closed door and take off with it, steal food from a dog, take a slice of pizza from a plate and run away with it, grab a skein of yarn and run through the house with it, and even pilfer a whole loaf of bread.

In this hilarious video, a cat sneaks in and takes a fax as it’s coming through. Our Sophie used to do that, and she’d shred it before we could read it. Lily will lift a sneaky paw and swipe food from my plate when I’m not looking, and she won’t leave her stuffed toys in the basket. Oh, she doesn’t play with them, she just grasps them in her mouth and brings them to me. At night, she decorates the house with them. Oops, she just now brought me her baby otter toy.

The funniest and by far the cutest thievery I saw on this video was a cat gingerly easing a pacifier from a baby’s mouth and running away with it.

Rags, in my Klepto Cat Mysteries, has sneaked away with a lot of items, but never in my imagination did I consider having him steal a baby’s pacifier while the baby’s using it. I guess that proves that cats are even more clever than we can imagine them to be.

Frivolous Friday – What Fans Are Saying About the Klepto Cat Holiday Stories

Yesterday I talked about my two Christmas stories. I thought you might like to read what others are saying about these books. Here are some of the 87 reviews posted at Amazon about A Picture Purrfect Christmas (Book 13).

“A heartwarming story of truth and miracles. While I have enjoyed reading all of the books in this series up to now, this is my clear favorite. Filled with adventure, drama, hope and family values, it is appropriate for all ages. Gotta love Rags!”

“One of, if not the best Christmas books that I have read in years. I highly recommend it for anyone to read. Excellent book explaining one of the reasons for celebrating the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. Fantastic book showing one of the real meanings of Christmas.”

“Marvelous Story. Just when I think I read the best of Patricia Fry the story gets better. I just loved this story, so much fear but with severely happy endings for so many people. May God bless this author.”

“A Cat With Claws to Latch Onto Your Heart. Never give up hope; for God works in Mysterious ways. Once you have read one of the books in Klepto Cat Series you will be hooked. With multidimensional characters that are believable and plots that pull you in and keep you glued to the book until the last page. Great short read for all ages. Pick up a copy for yourself or someone who likes reading light Mysteries that contain some unusual characters, both two and four legged. My rating of Picture Purrfect Christmas is 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a simple, heartwarming, lovely series that I strongly recommend to any cozy lover who has a warm spot for cats.”

“A Sweet and tender Story.”

Here are some of the 30 comments for Book 22, A Christmas to Purr About

“A beautiful Christmas story. I have read all of the Klepto Cat books so far and enjoyed them all, but this was the best of the best!!!! You would have to read the others to really understand all the characters, but they are worth it. I cried so much I had to stop and dry my tears to finish it. Truly makes you believe in miracles!! Loved it.”

“Awesome: This series is incredible. Rags is a great cat who is into everything. He is so lovable and fun to read about.”

“Once again a fantastic book: Every time I start reading a new Klepto cat book or I start reading a new chapter in this series, I cannot stop until I am finished. This is an exciting story that gripped me from the beginning to the last page. There is a new character involved that promises new excitement for future stories. Patricia Fry is one of my top favorite authors and I am anxiously looking forward to her next book. Thank you for another good, enjoyable read.”

“This is a series that warms the heart as it raises your heartbeat with suspense and danger. Ms. Fry brings today’s social issues to the attention of readers without hitting them over the with them. With remarkable characters, both four legged and the human counterparts to draw you in and hold you captive till the last page. Thank you Ms. Fry for the journey of Klepto Cat’s adventures and sharing them with myself and other readers. My rating of “A Christmas to Purr About – A Klepto Cat Mystery Book 22” is 5 out of 5 stars.”

Thoughts for Thursday – What’s Happening in the Klepto Cat Mystery Factory

I thought you’d like to know, I’ve finished another Klepto Cat Mystery. Book 32, Cats Don’t Squeal, will be published in book form as soon as my cover designer finishes her work. Those of you who are experiencing winter weather already will enjoy a frolic at the beach as the Rags and his family are still enjoying summer fun and a summer mystery, of course.

Rags has a new kitty friend. You’re going to love Pauline. Gladys discovers a new relative through a genealogy site. I think you’ll like Janet. She’s feisty and fun. Adam is prevalent in this story-what a neat kid! It sounds like all fun and games so far, but Rags won’t let you down. He offers up plenty of surprises that keep Detective Craig on his toes. No one wants to see Savannah go to jail because of something Rags did. Oh my!

While waiting for Book 32 to return from the editor and in between our work formatting the print book, I’ve been dabbling with an interesting mystery that will most likely be the theme for Book 33. Don’t look for that book to debut until after the busy holidays, however.

So, the print book should be out before Christmas. Those of you who use electronic readers to enjoy the Klepto Cat Mysteries, you may have to wait until the end of December or even the first of the year to catch up with Rags’s shenanigans.

In the meantime, while you’re going over your Christmas list and wracking your brain trying to come up with something special for special people, consider the Klepto Cat Mysteries. May I suggest the two Christmas stories—A Picture-Purrfect Christmas and A Christmas to Purr About. Order them from me at http://www.KleptoCatMysteries.com in print form and autographed or from Amazon.com in print or formatted for a reading devise.

Wild (and Sometimes Crazy) Wednesday – When You Leave Your Cat Behind

When you prepare to leave the house, do you get “the look” from your cat? Do her eyes seem to be pleading for you to stay? Do you feel guilty for leaving and often assure her that you will be back? What do you think is going through her mind at that point? What is she thinking as you walk out the door?

And what about when you leave with a suitcase? How do you explain that to your cat? She knows by now this means she’ll have to sleep alone that night and maybe several more nights. Do you try to sneak away—you know, pack when she isn’t in the room because she makes you feel guilty for leaving her? I’ll bet you sometimes find your cat curled up inside your suitcase or sitting on top of it. Have you almost cancelled a trip because of her reaction? Do you sometimes cut a visit or shopping spree short because you know she’s waiting at home for you?

It’s really okay. She doesn’t want to go with you—remember, she hates the carrier and you’ve never gotten her used to a leash. She’s just a little spoiled because you feed her on demand, create a lap for her to curl up in, talk to her, give her nice massages and even treats. But she’ll be okay while you’re gone.

You’ve arranged for someone she’s familiar with to come in and clean her litterbox, feed her, and give her a little companionship a couple of times a day. You can also make her life more bearable by leaving a little soft music playing while you’re gone. Did you know there’s music designed for cats—to comfort them? Check it out here. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/355308040/music-for-cats-0 (There’s also monkey music, if you happen to have a monkey.)

But there’s more that you can do. Don’t close her in, for example. Leave a window blind open so she can watch the birds, other cats, and neighbors while you’re gone. Make sure her favorite toys are accessible. Maybe bring in a new one—one that offers a challenge—a treat pops out when she bats it or something like that. And be sure to leave something you’ve worn recently on the bed or sofa for her to lay on. She’ll love taking in your scent while you’re gone.

Newsday Tuesday – Animals That Care About Other Animals

See the source imageThere are a lot of stories still surfacing about animals being saved from some of the horrendous California fires recently. In fact, this has spurred a rash of older stories of people saving their pets, animals saving animals, and all variety of animal rescue and survival. There are a few that stick in my mind.

I love the story of the cat who was so grateful to the firefighter who rescued him that he literally clung to him. There are pictures of Foster (the cat) riding on the shoulder of the firefighter who saved him. Foster was singed, but he’ll be okay. Often firefighters and other rescuers will make a home for the abandoned animals they find in disaster situations.

I also like the story of the dog who evidently went back into a burning house to save the family’s kitten. This is the picture that touched my heart. (Whether it’s real or not, who knows. It’s the Internet.)

But there are some true stories of animals helping animals in dire situations that I’d like to share. In Australia, a family dog refused to leave a litter of kittens and had to be rescued. They found her lying unconscious next to the kittens. As I understand it, all of them were revived.

Here are two stories involving mother cats and their kittens. One mother cat in Colorado got caught in a fire with her kittens and she had the wherewithal to move them into a room in the back of the house, away from the fire, tuck them into an alcove and shield them with her body. All were saved.

The most famous of heroic cats is a story out of Brooklyn in 1996. Scarlett, a street cat, entered a burning building five times to rescue her five kittens. She was seriously scarred by the burns she received, but she was adopted and was cherished as a housecat for the rest of her life. All but one of her kittens survived the ordeal.
