Cat Writers’ Association Annual Conference SUCCESS

I’m just home from the annual Cat Writers’ Association  conference in Houston and what a wonderful conference it was. For me, it had everything–amazing educational opportunities; plenty of networking time with fantastic people (writers, animal professionals, and definitely pet lovers); a beautifully orchestrated awards banquet,  and even the opportunity to get my cat fix at a cat cafe and cat show.

And I won a coveted Muse Medallions for some of the work I do in this blog. Lily was happy that I came back to her, but she isn’t too impressed with the medallion.

Thank you all for subscribing to and visiting Catscapades (an award-winning blog). Stay tuned through coming weeks and months as I share with you some of the new information and fresh  perspective I gleaned at this conference.

Frivolous Friday – Meowmoirs of a Klepto Cat

If you haven’t read my brand new book, Meowmoirs of a Klepto Cat, I hope you do. I’m interested in how this book is accepted. I decided to write it not from the cat’s perspective, but his owner’s perspective. Since Rags (the klepto cat) doesn’t speak or have a viewpoint in the Klepto Cat Mysteries, I did not have him speak or present a point of view in the Meowmoirs. But I’ve allowed Savannah, his owner, to write about Rags from the time she hooked up with him to currently. She shares many fresh, new stories of her exploits with Rags when he was young and she delves into his various habits and talks about how his behavior sometimes gets him (and others) into trouble.

The stories in this book are spine-tinglingly delightful, hilarious, heartwarming, and fun. You’ll enjoy reading about Rags’s kittenhood, which, until now, was pretty much a mystery. You’ll sit on the edge of your seat as we relive some of his most daring adventures. Those who have not read any of the Klepto Cat Mysteries will probably get hooked on them through this book. So if you have a friend with a birthday coming up and you think they would enjoy meeting this unruly, character of a cat, this is a good introduction for any reader.

Meowmoirs of a Klepto Cat is available in print and for your e-reader at amazon.com. Order one or more copies today!!! https://www.amazon.com/Meowmoirs-Klepto-Cat-Mystery-Mystrries/dp/0999472445/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1528197818&sr=8-1

Thoughts for Thursday – Why Would You Do That to a Cat?

Cats are cats, it’s true. But sometimes we treat them like a human baby or child or even a counterpart. We shave them, dress them up, put colored claw protectors on them, feed them from our plate, place a chair at the dinner table for the cat, talk to her, and certainly bring her presents.

You celebrate her birthday—sometimes inviting in friends and serving tuna cake. You respond to her mews and meows, ask her questions, and follow her instructions (to let her in or out, feed her, arrange yourself so she can get up on your lap, let her curl up on your lap even though you have other things to do). Does any of this sound familiar? I even let Lily lick a little cooked egg yolk from a spoon before I eat my breakfast. It’s one of our little rituals. No, I don’t use the same spoon!!!

Going back to shaving a cat, some people do this each year in order to keep the cat cool or to get rid of mats in her fur. Here are a couple of links discussing whether shaving a cat is a good idea or not: http://www.catster.com/lifestyle/how-to-shave-your-cat-at-home-dont-persian-cats-lion-cut

http://cattime.com/cat-facts/lifestyle/1870-should-i-shave-my-cat-to-keep-her-cool

As for dressing your cat, that’s up to you and the cat—most cats won’t tolerate it, but some will wear dresses, tutus, hats, and even eye glasses. I’m in Houston this week at the Cat Writers Conference where some of the members bring their cats and dress them each day. Sometimes they have a parade of pets for which the owners and pets will dress. I promise to bring back photos to share in this blog as well as stories of signing books at a cat show and at a cat café.

Wild (and Sometimes Crazy) Wednesday – Does Your Cat Judge?

I came across this site showing crazy photos of judgmental cats or cats being judgmental. I’m sure that you’ve felt your cat was judging you a time or two when you ate a second piece of chocolate or you neglected to offer him a bite of your tuna sandwich or when her dinner wasn’t served on time. Or maybe you get the “look” when you start to leave the house wearing a skirt that’s too short or those silly ripped jeans or because you’re leaving him alone. Oh my, the glaring stares we are subjected to when things don’t go exactly as the cat desires.

Do you see your cat in any of these pictures?

I’m off to the Cat Writer’s Association Conference tomorrow in Houston to mingle with other cat people and writers, share some of my knowledge as a panelist on research and fiction-writing, sign books at a cat cafe and a cat show, attend an awards banquet and sit in on several fascinating presentations related to cats and writing. I’ve attended several of these conferences all over the US–New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Arizona…and each of them has a different flavor and level of kitty-cat excitement. One of the perks is that your pets are invited. I’m leaving Lily and Sophie home, however and that’s just the way they like it. Of course, I bring them gifts from the goody bag we receive as attendees. And I’ll have a batch of fresh photos of attending cats and stories to share in upcoming posts.

Newsday Tuesday – Cats on Patrol

Why not introduce cats into police departments? Cats seem to have infiltrated every other area of our lives—as rescue animals, service animals, support animals…they take on jobs, offer comfort. And in some precincts, they even protect the community. How? By helping to sooth stressed employees, calming lost or abused children and other victims, and keeping the rodent problem down. Besides, every work environment should have a feline mascot.

Take Pawfficer Donut, for example. She works at a police station in Troy, Michigan. Here’s a cute story about this police cat.

http://cattime.com/cat-facts/advocacy/28279-police-cat-pawfficer-donut-reporting-for-duty

There are also cats keeping citizens safe in Lindenhurst, Illinois; Columbia, SC, and Port Lovaca, TX. Mister Meanor, the cat at the Lindenhurst Police Station is known to yell at prisoners when the sees them being taken to a cell. Now that’s unique.

A police department in Australia that depends on horses for upholding the law has “hired” a cat to keep the rodent population down in the stables.

And most of these cats are aptly pampered. Here are a couple of additional links showing cats on patrol:

Mindful Monday – National Hug Your Cat Day and There’s a NEW Klepto Cat Mystery

It’s true: The Meowmoirs of a Klepto Cat was released over the weekend and is available at amazon.com in print and for your Kindle (or other e-reader). Here’s the description:

“This is the life story of Rags, the amazing, precocious cat who stars in the Klepto Cat Mystery series. Read about his precarious kittenhood. Marvel at some of his intriguing and touching teenage escapades. And delight in revisiting many of his more recent adventures. Rags is a cat with a purpose. While some people believe it’s to cause chaos, others see this feline as a knight in furry armor. If we could get into Rags’s head, however, we’d probably see that it’s filled with butterflies and trinkets. Yes, he marches along in life to the beat of a different drummer and leaves behind an assortment of reactions. Is Rags clever or naïve, intuitive or fluky, smart or lucky? And does it really matter? One thing’s for sure, he makes an impression wherever he goes and that’s just the way his fans like it.”

What better day to announce this new book than on National Hug Your Cat Day? Now this is an easy holiday to celebrate—or is it. Some of us have cats that don’t like to be hugged. Okay, we can pet them and show them our appreciation for existing and for making our lives just a little (or a lot) cozier. And it’s also a good day to celebrate special cats that find their way into places where they are taken care of and where they spread joy.

For example, in Turkey, a cat wandered into a classroom one day and decided to make this his home. Tombi found his way to the school gardens and discovered that he likes children—especially one third grade classroom full of children and he made himself very much at home there with the kids, until one parent complained.

The teacher tried to find a home where Tombi would be happy, but he just wouldn’t adjust. And it was obvious that the children missed him. The parent eventually reversed their complaint and Tombi was happily admitted back into the school room. Come to find out, the children benefited from having Tombi around as much as he loved being part of the class.

Now I wonder, will Tombi graduate to fourth grade with the same children or will he stay behind and become mascot to a new group of third graders?

Read Tombi’s story here and see pictures of this charmer: http://www.lovemeow.com/stray-cat-wanders-into-school-classroom-and-decides-to-help-and-make-the-place-his-home-2539181867.html

There’s another tangerine cat who attends school in San Jose, California. Bubba lived near the school and found that he would rather be there with all of the commotion on campus than lolling in his own backyard quietly watching the birds. Here’s his story:

http://www.lovemeow.com/ginger-cat-bubba-loves-school-so-much-they-issue-student-body-card-for-1608473956.html

Yet, another ginger (or orange) cat attends college in Bavaria, Germany. The pictures of this cat interacting with students are wonderful. But it appears that all he wants to do is cuddle and sleep through class every day. http://www.lovemeow.com/ginger-cat-knows-every-student-on-campus-1843781723.html

It’s interesting that all three of these cats are ginger cats, as was Dewey, the famous library cat. But wait, aren’t ginger cats supposed to be kind of ornery, active, prone to trouble? I’ve known a few like that. But there is also the calm, sweet, almost lazy marmalade cat. There are quite a few other famous ginger cats, including Morris. Those of us, who are old enough, will remember him from the cat food commercials. Spot from “Star Trek The Next Generation” was a ginger cat, as were Thomasina (from the Disney production of the same name), Thomas O’Malley (from the “Aristocats”), and good old Garfield.

Frivolous Friday — Over-the-Top Names for Cats

Do you find it easy or difficult to name a new pet? If you’re like me, sometimes the name sort of comes with the pet—the name is obvious from the moment you fall in love with him or her. Other times, you struggle to name a cat, dog, reptile, horse, or chicken.

Often, we will observe the cat for a while before naming her–get to know her personality, her likes and dislikes, the way she plays, her favorite toys, maybe the way she moves. We’ve even been known to let a cat name herself through her actions and antics. I named our tortie Sophie because she has a rather old-fashioned look about her and Sophie seems like an old-fashioned name. I picked Lily because Lily was such a sweet flower of a kitten.

Do you ever use naming sites to come up with names for your pets? I use them often for the characters (both human and furred) in my Klepto Cat Mystery series. Most of us, I think, choose names that fit the cat—Tabby, Frisky, Buffy, Cali (for Calico), Angel, Tiger, Marmalade…

What do you think are the most popular cat names these days? One site says it’s Bella, Shadow, Tigger, Oreo, Molly, Smokey, and Oliver.

Here’s a site that lists 2,000 cat name ideas.  http://petrix.com/catnames/ Believe it or not it includes ZZZ, Catsup, and Catillac. But the most unusual cat names can be found on this site—no make that ridiculous cat names. I mean, Mr. TiddyBomBoms? And I thought my small daughters’ choice of PomPom for a kitten was silly. How about Tuna Catserole, Winky Woozerton, Butt Nugget or, for a cat with a Hitler-style mustache, Kitler?

Wild (and Sometimes Crazy) Wednesday – Amazing Cats in the Military

This week we remembered our veterans. It seems appropriate to include feline veterans—cats who served in time of war. Here’s a site celebrating eight cats of war. You don’t believe that a cat can be of service to the military? Well they can—they can offer support and entertainment on ships and bases, but some cats have also taken on life-saving jobs.

Able Seacat Simon was the first cat known to receive a military name. And he was buried with full naval honors. He was smuggled onto the HMS Amethyst while the ship was in port at Hong Kong and worked as a mouser. Sailors often found little gifts of rats in their beds. Simon was wounded in battle and, sadly, later died of his injuries.

Private First Class Hammer wandered into a tent on a US Army base in Iraq when he was a kitten. He brought so much comfort and support to the soldiers that upon the end of their term one sergeant contacted Alley Cat Allies who raised funds to bring him to the US where he lived out his days in comfort.

In 1854, British and French soldiers found a cat and rescued him. The cat ultimately found storerooms of food buried all over the country and saved the soldiers from starvation.

Salty was a US Coast Guard mascot for the San Diego Cost Guard in WW11. He was considered the first cat to take part in a rescue mission.

A cat named Mourka was a war hero cat because he delivered messages which ultimately saved lives.

Pooli was so treasured that on the trip back to the states on shipboard, she was given a round-the-clock guard to keep her safe. She returned home with four battle scars and three service ribbons.

Newsday Tuesday – There are Animal Shelters and Then There are ANIMAL SHELTERS

The trend today is for the “No Kill” animal shelter. I wonder, isn’t there another word we can use in place of kill? Something positive? Life For Animals or Living Pet Shelter…

Not every place that houses homeless animals is considered or termed a shelter. There are rescue facilities, sanctuaries, refuges, adoption centers. And while most such facility directors now focus on saving as many cats and dogs as they can, others are taking pet adoption to another level with plush pens, private rooms where you can get to know the animal you’re considering adopting, and other amenities.

While many shelters are set up to accept rabbits, horses, burros, mules, and even cows, others have even more unusual animals for adoption, like chickens, ferrets, pigs, parakeets, and tropical fish. Some have even been known to take in snakes.

One of the most unique adoption shelters I came across in my research was Strangest Angels Animal Rescue in Los Angeles, where founder, Elle, says, “I’ll rescue anything with a pulse and sometimes even in my best dress.” Her priority is animals on the euthanasia list at other shelters. Visit her site here: http://www.strangestangels.org She truly sounds like an angel.

In Ramona, CA, Hearts and Hands Animal Rescue will take in dogs and cats, but also zebras, exotic birds, tortoises, and camels. If you’re interested in unique animal rescue operations, you must visit this site: http://www.hhar.org.

Anyone who loves animals and who feels for those who have been abandoned or abused, have, at some time in their life, envisioned the ideal for these beautiful creatures. And thankfully, some of these people are living their dream and many animals are thriving because of them.
