Frivolous Friday – Smokey (aka Rags) Lookalike Contest

Yesterday we celebrated Smokey’s 9th birthday with a picture of him when he was a kitten and a current photo. He isn’t all that unique in looks. Some of you have probably known cats that look something like Smokey or his portrayal—Rags. It’s been a while since we’ve had a contest, so I thought we’d launch one in honor of this popular—in fact, well-loved cat.

Do you, a neighbor, or friend have a cat that resembles Rags? If so, send me a photo and I’ll post it at this blog and let Lily and Sophie-kitties choose the winner—the cat that most resembles their friend and idol, Rags.

Here are a few look-alikes I’ve collected over the years. Check out the eyebrows on the one cat. I met him at a cat café in Camarillo, California.

The winner of this contest, by the way, will receive a print or Kindle copy of a Klepto Cat Mystery of their choice. (Print copies will be mailed within the US only.)

Now go take pictures of your own lookalike cat, one you’ve seen on the streets or living in a local bookstore or nursery or that belongs to someone you know. (Note: The cats in these photos are NOT Smokey (Rags). They’re lookalikes.)

Thoughts for Thursday – Happy Independence Day and it’s Smokey’s Birthday

Yes, Smokey (aka Rags) was one of six adorable kittens born July 4th to a pure Ragdoll cat. He’s the handsome guy on the far right–top row. He and his siblings are nine this year.

Fireworks probably wouldn’t be appropriate when celebrating Smokey’s birthday—cats don’t like that type of hullabaloo, but he’ll probably enjoy an extra treat or a new toy. I’m sure his new family will accommodate his whims.

In the meantime, Happy Birthday, dear Smokey. You are loved and admired (just as a cat likes it).

Wild (and Sometimes Crazy) Wednesday – My Favorite Klepto Cat Book

Authors are often asked which of their books in a series is their favorite. My response changes with the tide—and my mood. There are also other factors involved in selecting my personal fave. Often my favorite is the one I’m working on at the moment. Or I might dislike it the most when it doesn’t seem to be coming together easily. The one I just finished writing is typically at the top of my best-in-the-series list. But I have to say there’s something special for me in each and every one of my Klepto Cat Mysteries.

I love the Christmas stories, “A Picture Purrfect Christmas” and “A Christmas to Purr About” because I do enjoy sweet, happy endings. I’m kind of sappy that way. If a story (even one I write) makes me feel emotional, I believe it’s a good story.

I really enjoy the stories with horses involved. So a recent story, “Furever Friends” was fun to write. And one of my early horsey stories is still on my top 35 list—“Corral Cat Caper.”

I have a lot of fun adding a supernatural aspect to a story, so “Mansion of Meows” was a kick for me to write. I especially enjoyed writing “Pawsitively Sinister.” Talk about a wild otherworldly ride!!! And let’s not forget “Cats in the Belfry.” Writing that book was an interesting process.

Tales where I introduce other interesting animals often turn out to be quite delightful from the author’s standpoint. I enjoy playing around with new purrsonalities and personalities, as well in my stories. “Meow for the Money” features some new cats, as does a more recent book, “Cats Don’t Squeal.”

I’ve asked fans which book in the series is their favorite and almost across the line they say, “All of them.” Some say, “Whichever book I’m reading at the time.” Many people have read the series more than once. Of course I certainly have. Do you know how many times it takes to edit a book? Neither do I. There’s certainly no rule of thumb. I continue editing until I believe the book is finished.

Do I have a book-regret? One that I’m not proud of? One I wish I hadn’t written? I have to say, no. From my vantage point, there is something charming, interesting, entertaining, educational, sweet, fun, and/or intriguing in every single book in the series.

By the way, Book 36, “A Whisker of Truth” should be ready for those of you who read the paper copies any day now. I’ll announce the new book here and on my Klepto Cat Mystery Facebook page.

Newsday Tuesday – Take Your Pet to Work Day

This interesting day was celebrated a week or so ago. Actually, most of the people I know work with their pets around every day because they (we) work at home.

Some cats have their home in a place of business—a warehouse, corporate building, boat dock business, etc. I personally know cats that work in libraries, feed barns, bookstores, nurseries, veterinarian’s offices, and pet stores.

Do you work in a place that observes an annual “take your pet to work day?” Or do employees typically bring their dog, cat, bird to the office just for the fun of it? How does that work out?

Animals at work can be distracting. They vie for attention, need to be walked or fed, get into things when you’re not looking, maybe rumble with each other. But isn’t it fun to share the whole day with your pet and to share your pet with your coworkers?

Lily and Sophie are a part of my work day every day since I write at home. Lily has some useful jobs: she’s makes a great paperweight, she sometimes exterminates wayward bugs or spiders that find their way in here, she monitors the paper going in and out of the printer, and she takes inventory of what’s on the shelves and even what’s in the trash can. Lily also decorates my office by dropping her toys here and there, she lets me know when it’s time to take a break, and she keeps my office chair warm when I’m not working. At times, she even helps me flesh out a story.

Sophie isn’t as helpful (thankfully), but she does enjoy filing–or maybe just hanging out in a file drawer.

Mindful Monday – Smokey (aka Rags) Update

As most of you know, my mother’s cat, Smokey, is my model for Rags in the Klepto Cat Mysteries. He is the bigger-than-life, confident, sociable, clever, and interesting half Ragdoll cat my mother adored for almost nine years.

When Mama accepted the gift of a kitten, she had hoped for a lap cat—an indoor cat that would follow her around and curl up in her lap throughout the day. That wasn’t Smokey’s plan.

Oh, he spent time indoors. He loved sprawling in Mama’s lap and did so for about an hour almost daily. He had his favorite napping spots in the house. And he always came inside to greet guests. But he was an out-of-doors type of cat—and an avid hunter.

Now that Mama is gone and Smokey has a new home, he is a total indoor cat—a convert. Yes, a cat can change his ways. No one ever thought he could be reformed—believe me, we tried over the years. He seemed to think we were torturing him when we wouldn’t allow him to go out. The only time he chose to stay in was when it was raining or when the gardeners or tree-trimmers were there. Of course, we locked him in at night.

Smokey was an only cat for almost all of his 9 years. Now he has a sister. It took him a while to accept her, but now they share the cat tree and his favorite table (from his former home) and the two of them actually play together sometimes. Watch out, Kitty Boo-Boo, the gentle giant can play rough.

Mealtime can still be a problem as Smokey’s on a special diet, but his new caretakers (one of Mama’s granddaughters and her family) are doing their best to iron out that situation and keep him from dipping into forbidden fruits.

Frivolous Friday – The Cat Nap

There’s nothing as peaceful as a cat at rest. I love a slumbering cat. They’re so cute and sweet and relaxed. It just makes me want to curl up with the cat. But humans don’t seem to be wired like a cat—we can’t fall into a deep sleep so easily, nor can we awaken as quickly and completely as a cat who is startled.

The cat’s sleep pattern and habits is a puzzle of nature. They can be playing one minute and sound asleep the next. Five minutes later or a couple of hours later she’s up and at ’em again.

Another mystery is how a cat can sleep in some of the positions he gets into. Some cats can sleep in the most uncomfortable looking positions. I’ve even seen kittens fall asleep with their head in their food bowl, in the midst of playing. Lily sometimes sleeps halfway in and halfway out of her bed. And what about these shots of Lily and Smokey who appear to have fallen asleep in mid-rollover.

If you like these shots, you’ll love this site as it features cats sleeping in odd positions. https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=sleeping+cats+images&qpvt=sleeping+cats+images&FORM=IGRE

Thoughts for Thursday – The Cat Stare

If you have a cat, you’ve been subjected to the cat stare. It usually happens around meal time or treat time—if you keep your cats on a fairly regular schedule. This is a picture of Lily and Sophie trying to bore a hole through Dennis so he’ll remember to give them their dehydrated chicken treat. How can anyone resist the stare?

Sometimes the stare means please tell me you aren’t leaving me again—all alone…who’s going to feed me? I was at the brunt of Lily’s stare once when I came home from a neighbor home after playing with a couple of kittens. Her look seemed to be saying, “How could you, you traitor?”

Wild (and Sometimes Crazy) Wednesday – Cat Art Has no Bounds

When it comes to cat art, there seems to be no limit to the mediums and styles and materials. I have stuffed cats, ceramic cats, wooden, metal, paper, glass, plastic, and fabric cats. There are cats on canvas, wicker shaped into cats, clay cats, bead cats, cloisonné cats and gems formed into cats.

The types of art used to create cats is also mind boggling. I have a friend who does dot art—the complete piece is formed using dots. This same friend once painted a cat lying in a small wooden bowl for me. I love that piece. Artists depict cats using oil paints, chalk, watercolor, pencil, flowers, and techniques I probably couldn’t define. But here’s a new one you might find interesting. I guess you’d call it “hatching.” Check out this artist’s “frazzled” cats. It’s quite unique.

Newsday Tuesday – Meet the Incredible, Fascinating Cat-Fox

There’s an interesting new cat living on an island in France. They’re calling it a cat-fox and they say there are only 16 of them. What’s unique about this animal? It looks like a cat, but is longer, has larger ears and more developed canine teeth. This species also has quite a long tail with rings around it and a black tip.

In testing the DNA of this unusual cat, they’ve determined that it is not of the same species as our domesticated cat, but closer to the African forest cat. They’re still studying these cats, which some say resemble the cats in a myth created by early shepherds. So one has to wonder is this actually a new species or is it newly discovered?

I was intrigued by the odd-eyes of this one. I couldn’t find information indicating if this is common to the cat-fox or not. From what I read, it doesn’t appear that this cat has been domesticated.

Mindful Monday – The Cats I Meet in My Travels

Cats come in many shapes, sizes, colors, styles, and temperaments. As an admirer of the feline species, I find it difficult to walk past a cat on the street, in a window, even a cat on a shelf without acknowledging it. Yes, even a ceramic cat or a stuffed one can turn my head. What is it about cats that’s mesmerizing? Some say it’s their eyes.

Yet, look at this beauty I happened across while walking last week. She wouldn’t look at me—refused to “smile for the camera,” but isn’t she exquisite, nonetheless? There’s purrsonality there even though she’s simply meat-loafing on the sidewalk in front of her house seemingly without expression.

You can’t see into her soul through her eyes, but she’s beguiling just the same. Is that white fur the core of her charm? Is it the satisfied—almost Cheshire cat look on her face? Maybe it’s simply because she’s a cat.

This cat in the tree also stopped me in my tracks one day while I was walking with my camera. And he posed almost as if deliberately. I believe I captured a bit of this cat’s character—his persona in his stance and his piercing eyes. I think this guy’s a bit of a scalawag—a maverick in his neighborhood. Oh, he might not cause trouble, but he knows how to make it and he knows how to avoid it. He’s probably king of his territory and maybe a bit lonely because of it.
