Feline Fun Friday – Some Interesting January Cat Holidays

Take your pick on which cat holidays you want to observe this week. Tomorrow is Dress Your Pet Day. Does your cat have a wardrobe—maybe a tutu or a cape? What about a harness?

People are more inclined to dress dogs than they are cats and I think we all know why. The reason is more about the cats than the person. You might have a desire to slip an adorable bonnet on your cat, but how many cats do you know that would tolerate it?

I said I know people who dress their cats—well, I’ve seen cats all dressed up at Cat Writers Association conferences I’ve attended, and at cat shows. I vividly remember meeting one cat who was with a woman in a wheelchair. Both were dressed for high tea with the queen. The cat even wore a fancy hat and glasses and carried a handbag. Can you imagine it? Adorable.

I know people who dress their dogs every single day. It’s cute, but…a little odd to me.

Another holiday I didn’t see coming is Kiss a Ginger Day. That occurred January 12th. No worries, if you have a ginger cat, you can celebrate this every day of the year.

Kiss a Ginger Day actually came about to celebrate red-headed children who were sometimes being teased or worse because of their hair color. There’s quite a history of fear and abuse around people with red hair. International Kiss a Ginger Day was started in 2009 to honor people with red hair, but of course the cat is going to get in on the fun. So if you know a special ginger cat, it’s never too late to express your love.

Here’s a site celebrating some of the most well known ginger cat influencers. But don’t forget Garfield and Morris.

Next week we celebrate National Answer Your Cat’s Questions Day so be thinking about what you your cat might be asking you.

Meowy Monday – Your Cat, the Teacher

If you pay attention at all to your cat, you know how much you can learn from her. For example:

Always stretch after a long nap. It’s good for the body as well as the soul.

Never eat just because someone has served you a meal—even if you asked for it.

Sleep when the urge hits—anywhere, anytime.

There are oh, so many lessons our cats attempt to teach us—patience, how to ask for what you want, persistence usually pays off, play when the urge strikes no matter what time of day or night, there are right ways and wrong ways to stroke a cat, and of course there’s the old tried and true: if you want the best seat in the house, you’ll have to move the cat.

One of my daughters gave me a sweet book filled with “Things My Cat Has Taught Me.” Here are a few:

“Take chances. Act as if you have eight more lives left.”

“The world is as big as you are brave.”

“Be fearless, but have an escape plan.”

“Hiding is more fun than seeking.”

“Watch and wait. The world will present itself to you.”

“You’re never too small to make a difference.”

“You can purr your way out of just about anything.”

I hope this made you smile and say, “Yes—so true.”

You’re welcome.

Feline Fun Friday—Looking Back and Moving Forward

Ten years ago this month we were getting ready to come out with our third Klepto Cat Mystery, Sleight of Paw. Do you remember that book? We had recently published our first book, Catnapped, in print. Yes, our original plan was to produce ebooks—specifically, Kindle books. But pressure to produce the books in print won over and we now offer all of our 71 cat mysteries (cozy mysteries) in both print and for your kindle.

2013 was also the year we established a fan page at Facebook—KleptoCatMysteries. Since then we’ve added CalicoCatMysteries.

A lot has happened here in the “factory” over the last 10 years and it’s all been good. I’m still able to write and work my way through the publishing process. My publishing team has been steady and loyal. It’s been a good ride with great results and I have you, Rags’s and Olivia’s fans, to thank.

Gracias, Merci, Danke, Mahalo, Grazie and Thank You ever so much.

By the way, 2023 marks my 50th year as a published author—my first piece was published in a magazine in 1973. My first book published in 1978. To date I have published 114 books—71 of them cozy mysteries.

Just so you know, I’m still having fun and the creative juices are still flowing. Watch for at least 6 more stories in 2023.

Paws Up for Wednesday—What’s Happening in the Cat Mystery Factory?

It’s been a great year for the Klepto Cat and Calico Cat Mysteries. We published 13 books this year—7 Calico Cat Mysteries and 6 Klepto Cat Mysteries, which means we’re producing books at more than one per month.

As a bonus we came out with a new Christmas story. This is my 4th Christmas story in the Klepto Cat Mystery series, and some say it is the BEST. Be sure to read Rags Rocks Christmas. I think you’ll be glad you did.

So what’s happening this first month of 2023? The print version of Book 61 in the Klepto Cat Mysteries is ready to go to press. We’re waiting for the formatting process to be completed for the Kindle version. Watch for our announcement probably late next week.

Meanwhile I’m working on Book 12 of Olivia’s stories—the Calico Cat Mysteries. This one has an interesting surprise

Yes, we’re moving right along just as Rags’s and Olivia’s fans like it.

Meowy Monday—Happy Mew Year

January 2nd is designated as Happy Mew Year—or a day to once again acknowledge the beloved cat. Here are some ideas for celebrating Happy Mew Year with your cat: Sing cat-related songs such as those from the play/movie, Cats, or “What’s New Pussycat?” or “Pink Panther.” How about “The Siamese Song?” Remember this song in Lady and the Tramp? (I am Siamese, if you please…) You could read your cat a cat-related book—a Klepto Cat Mystery or Calico Cat Mystery or nursery rhymes—“Three Little Kittens Have Lost Their Mittens.”

Make resolutions involving your cat or other cats—plan a visit to your veterinarian if it’s been a while since you’ve done so. Visit a cat café. Donate or volunteer at a local cat shelter.

This is also Pet Travel Safety Day and a good time to discover the best way to keep your cat safe should you need to transport her. It could happen. Surely, you take her to the veterinarian when called for and for annual checkups. What if you have to evacuate because of fire or flood (I did once with two cats), or you plan to move to a new location? (I’ve done that with cats, too.) Maybe your cat simply enjoys a car ride.

Tips: Use a crash-tested pet crate and buckle it into the backseat of your car. Look into car seats for cats and follow the directions for using it. This will most likely mean getting your cat accustomed to wearing a harness. It can be done.

Happy Mew Year everyone. Keep your cat(s) close and safe.

Feline Fun Friday – Cats in Cars

Most household cats have experienced the dreaded car ride. Not all cats hate car rides, but for most cat owners who must take their cat to the veterinarian or who move to a new location with a cat struggle physically and emotionally with issues around transporting their cat.

Grandma used to take her cats to the vet in a pillowcase. Most of us now use a cat carrier to keep our cats contained and safe and from under foot while you’re driving.

But there are other ways to contain your cat. One cat owner put her cat in her child’s car seat and the results were amazing. I can’t imagine any cat I’ve ever had agreeing to this mode of travel, but this cat seems to be in the zone in this seat. Check it out!

If you need to transport a cat that hates to travel, there are some safe options. Here are some more cat-friendly carriers designed for cats. https://excitedcats.com/best-cat-carriers-for-car-travel/

And what about car seats—designed for cats and small dogs? In these cases, you’ll want to train your cat to a harness so you can secure her in the seat. https://www.thedodo.com/dodowell/cat-car-seat

Meowy Monday – The Day After For Your Cat

Your cats are just getting used to the strange and colorful things you’ve brought into your house this month and hearing the sound of Christmas carols, watching pretty packages appear then disappear, having guests in and opening gifts out leaving pretty paper and ribbon to play with. Now you’re going to put it all away? What will your cat think?

Will she miss the tree and the ornaments? Or will she relax once the house and the energy level of everyone returns to the normal she’s accustomed to?

Olivia hasn’t missed a beat with all the changes around our house. She’s paid little attention to the tree and packages. She simply doesn’t seem impressed. In fact I’ve had trouble getting pictures of her with the tree or any of our decorations because she stays away from them. Should I encourage her to get into the holiday spirit by posing her or putting a Santa hat on her? I don’t think so. Olivia doesn’t do holidays.

For those of you who’ve enjoyed watching your cats participate in the holiday—you know, curl up under the tree, allow you to dress her up all Christmassy, crawl into a box while you’re wrapping, and play with the ribbon, here’s a treat. A whole bunch of photos of cats at Christmastime. Enjoy:

Feline Fun Friday – Christmas Gifts For Cats

In case you need to do any last minute shopping, Olivia wanted me to offer some ideas for her cat fans out there. Here’s her gift list for cats:

A bird feeder either attached to the window so your cat can watch the birds up close and personal or at least at a close enough distance so she has a good view.

A water fountain. Cats love to lap fresh running water. Olivia sometimes enjoys just sitting in front of her fountain watching it.

More tunnels, cat trees and other climbing apparatus. Olivia says, “A cat can never have too many of these.”

Treats. Olivia likes dried chicken treats and Greenies—chicken flavored.

But time is the best gift of all. Time spent with your beloved cat(s) just hanging out, playing, watching her play—Olivia loves an audience. She also appreciates our participation.

There you have it: Olivia’s Christmas gift list for your favorite cat.

Meowy Catmas to you all.
