Newsday Tuesday—Cat Jewelry and other symbols

If you’re reading this blog, you’re either an avid reader of my books (thank you very much), you like cats, or you’re one of my family members (love you guys!). If you fit into the “like cats” category, you probably have things around your house related to cats, right? And this is not necessarily of your doing. When people learn that you like something in particular—horses, the beach, pansies, inkwells, apple motif, etc.—people start bringing related things to you. I know someone who doesn’t like snails, yet she has a collection of snail items—all given to her by friends and family.

LilySophieI have cats everywhere—cat calendars, note cards, jewelry, figurines, vases, bookmarks, key ring, blanket throws, pillows, pictures, clothing, dishes, posters, pencil holders, and even stuffed kitties. (One of them is a computer screen wiper.)

But, of course, my favorite cats are the real cats that grace our home—Lily and Sophie. Without them, life would sure be…less fuzzy and sandy and fun.

Mindful Monday–Talking Cats

I had a delightful talk last week with a reporter from the Wall Street Journal. She was doing a piece on cat fiction and seemed particularly interested in talking cats versus ordinary cats. As many of you know, the cats in my Klepto Cat Mysteries are ordinary cats who sometimes get involved in some extraordinary situations. Rags, for example, is a kleptomaniac cat. Taking things is unusual, but not out of the scope of what a cat can and might do.

fry-lily-1-10_0019-2Some authors of cat fiction write scripts for their cat characters—and sometimes the dog, horse, and chicken characters, as well. Others have created cats who can communicate with their owners through telepathy.

When the reporter asked me why I did not choose to have my cats talk or send telepathic messages, I told her it didn’t occur to me. But that I probably wouldn’t have chosen to include talking cats in my stories because my background in writing is so strictly nonfiction. Fiction is relatively new to me, but talking cats would be a real stretch.

When I discussed this with a friend later, I said, “The last time I read a story with talking animals was probably in fourth grade.” She, on the other hand, reads books with talking animals and loves them.

How about you? Do you prefer that the animals in the stories you read are more animal-like or human-like?

Frivolous Friday—Some of My Fave Cat Photos

I love cats and I love photography. Today, I thought I’d combine the two and share a few of my favorite cat pictures.

Katie

Katie

This is a neat shot I took of Katy, our Himalayan some years ago. It’s not always easy to capture a mood or a personality when photographing cats, but I thought I did so with this picture. She was peering at me from under a coffee table and I happened to have my camera ready. Stunning, isn’t it?

This is one of my all time favorite shots of smokeybee-0141my mother’s cat, Smokey. I tell people he actually choreographed this picture. I was focusing on his face as he peered through a flower bush. When I took the picture, he leaped at a bee and this is the result. It won a People’s Choice First Award at our county fair a few years ago.

There’s nothing quite as fun to photograph as a kitten. I practically wore out my camera when Lily was a kitten. And when I hear that someone has a kitten, I’m quick to visit–with my camera, of course. In fact, I think I’ll devote a blog post to kitten photography soon. In the meantime, here’s one of Lily’s baby pictures. lillymothersday2009-007Don’t you just want to tickle that tummy?

Bring Your Best Game Thursday—Hidey Cats

Neighborhood Garden Cat

Neighborhood Garden Cat

I’m not running a contest today because I want to talk about something that happened with one of our cats last night. For years, we have kept our cats inside and they have been purrfectly happy, except for one little girl we adopted from the animal shelter. She absolutely unequivocally refused to use a litter box. She would “go” outside, only—even in the rain! So Dinah became our only inside/outside kitty. Thankfully, she didn’t succumb to a coyote, dog, or owl attack, like many cats do. Nor was she run over by a car. She died of a brain tumor, of all things. RIP dear Dinah.

Fast forward to 2016. Late yesterday, we had mattresses delivered. We propped open a screen door for the hefty delivery guys, and I stood guard so no cats would inadvertently escape. Neither Sophie nor Lily would normally run for safety outside because their safe area is inside, but you never know when something might frighten them in that direction. Once the delivery men had left, we closed the door and settled back into our life.

However, when it came time to feed the cats, only one of them came to the kitchen. Lily alyzaylilymidjuly09-010was nowhere to be found. And she’s the one who never misses a meal. If nothing else brings her to the forefront, it is mealtime.

Well, we called and we searched and Lily did not even respond–this is so unlike her. We opened closets and cupboards that haven’t been opened in weeks, we looked high and we looked low—there was no Lily. Could she have slipped outside unnoticed? After searching outside, under cars, in the garage, neighbors’ yards, we were just sick. What could have happened to sweet Lily?

About twenty minutes had passed when we decided she’d been swallowed up by the large gob of plastic wrap the delivery men carried out and she was in the back of their truck. But before the phone call went through at Sears, we spotted Lily’s little face peering out from behind the TV set. She enjoyed her dinner. We did not. We were still too upset.

All is fine. She’s on my lap purring as I write this.

frypay11Do you have hidey cats? I thought we’d discovered all of our cats’ special hiding places—in the linen closet among the folded towels, up in the lining of an old mattress, in the closets (of course), under the beds and under the blankets. Where are your cats’ favorite hiding spots? One of my grandcats hid in the car engine once. Could have been disastrous. As it was, he only got a bit of a haircut. Another grandcat liked to explore the inside of the oven. Once, he burned his paws—yes, the oven was hot that day—and he immediately jumped into the sink and walked around in cool water.

I can’t tell you how happy we are to have Lily safe with us and I sure hope she never puts us through anything like that again.

One neighbor suggested Lily was trying to help me come up with a storyline for my next Klepto Cat Mystery. I can sure write that script from a deeply emotional place now.

Wild and (Sometimes) Crazy Wednesday—Capturing the Cat

LilyFebDid you send a photo of your favorite tortie/calico to the email I gave you yesterday? How many of you have torties or calicos? Have you ever notice that some of them behave differently than the other cats you’ve had in your life? I often hear stories of naughty calicos and out-of-control torties. In fact, I had a calico once who was the most defiant and ornery cat I’d ever had. She was into everything she wasn’t supposed to bother. Even a spray of water didn’t deter her from destroying household plants, scratching furniture, etc. Yet, I loved her dearly. We’re quick to forget and forgive when it comes to our furry friends, aren’t we?

Do you enjoy photographing your cats as much as I do? This morning, I’m trying to catch LilymirrorLily in the act of bringing me a toy. I’ve told you before that every morning she brings me a toy from her overflowing toy basket—a baby possum, hedgehog, eagle, cat, bird, etc. And I’ve yet to get a good shot of her with the toy in her mouth. She drops it at my feet or just outside my office door before I can get my camera ready.

So this morning, when she left the office, I set the phone camera and was ready for her to return with a toy. Soon I heard her “prrrt” indicating she was coming with a gift, but she dropped it before I was prepared…again. This time she brought one of the grandchildren’s dolls—so she’s been pilfering in their toy box, too.

Here are a couple of shots I’ve taken of Lily, lately. Enjoy. And send me your cat photos. I’d love to share.

Newsday Tuesday—Show Off Your Cat

Cat Faeries has deemed February Tortie and Calico month. If you have a Tortie (Tortoiseshell cat) or Calico (a cat of 3 colors in patches, including white), send her picture to catfaeries@catfaeries.com with this in the subject line: Calico/Tortie.

Lily and Sophie

Lily and Sophie

Here’s the picture I sent of Sophie (Tortie) and Lily (a dilute tabby with small patches of orange–some consider her a Torbie). Sophie is actually, technically a Calico, but you can only tell it by rolling her over. She has a large patch of white on her tummy. On top, she’s all Tortie.

Mindful Cat Monday—Cat Love

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERADid you remember your cat on Valentine’s Day? Perhaps you put her plate of cat food in a heart-shape when you fed her. Or you presented him with a new toy. Maybe you just spent more time scratching him behind the ears.

We wonder sometimes if our feline pets actually feel a sense of emotion for us or if they just know which side their bread is buttered on and are bent on milking us for every handout they can get. Do cats feel affection or do they simply know how to get what they want?

I like to think that when Sophie cuddles on my lap or when Lily rubs against me and responds to my petting that they’re expressing something akin to love. And I wondered what the experts say on this subject. If you’ve wondered, too, here are some links you might find interesting:

One expert says cats finagle themselves into the most inconvenient, awkward spots because they want to be next to you when you sleep.

Another one says that a cat blink can be a gesture of affection.

How does your cat show love?

Frivolous Friday—Cats at Play

One of the things that endears us to cats is their playful nature. It’s a heartless individual021 who doesn’t smile when they see a kitten at play. But even an older cat will bat at an object or attack something that intrigues him. As sick and tired as Max was, I caught him reaching out to play with something that caught his attention just days before he passed.

But we must remember that the activities cats use in play are actually the very activities they’d use for survival—stalking, attacking (pouncing), leaping (to catch something in the air), batting… It’s all part of their hunting routine. They’re programmed to hunt and kill. But cats also seem to have a great sense of humor because they make it all look like serious fun.

marmaladeremodel-004Just as cats have different appetites, they also have different play techniques. That’s why there are so many toy choices at your local pet store. But then each type of toy brings out different instincts for cats. I like to offer my cats a variety of toys for a variety of activity.

Lily and Sophie love the feather wand. We found the feather (or toy) on a string or cord to be very unsuccessful. Sophie got tangled in the string once while we were playing with her and it frightened her. The danger seemed real with that toy, so we discarded it. But when a visitor wants to make friends with our cats, we hand them the feather wand.

Lily loves hiding under newspaper and blanket tents. She also likes to jump up and try to catch wads of paper when I toss them for her. Speaking of places to hide out, Lily is always on hand when I come home from shopping. At her first opportunity, she climbs into the bags to examine their contents. And boxes coming from Amazon, always get close scrutiny from Lily.

One of Lily’ favorite play sessions occurs each morning when I cut the end off of a plastic LilyToysstraw and let it fly in the air toward her. On a good day, she’ll play with that piece of plastic for a long time, hiding it and finding it, stalking it, batting it all around the room, etc. She also loves her small stuffed animals. While she doesn’t play with them so much anymore, she carries them around and drops them in strategic places throughout the house. At night, she moves them to new spots. This game of musical toys keeps her busy, indeed.

Sophie likes the stuffed toys with tails, such as the baby possum. She delights in tossing it in the air and attacking it over and over again. Both cats go crazy if a moth finds its way in the house. They look like ballerinas, climbing, leaping, doing all sorts of acrobatics trying to catch the live, flying thing.

Most cats are curious about anything new or out of place. A coin left sitting on a tabletop where there are cats, often winds up on the floor. An earring or hair pin on the floor, will soon be batted under a piece of furniture. If you’re looking for the lid off your toothpaste, ask the cat.

Max delighted in knocking my pen off my desk and he got pretty good at slam-dunking it into the waste basket. One swipe of a paw was about all he could manage as he got older.

What does your cat like to play with? What lengths do you go to in order to entertain your cat?
