Newsday Tuesday—Cat Rehabilitation

010There’s a boarding cattery in the UK that specializes in rehabilitation. Owner/operator, Sam, is an aromatics practitioner and Reiki healer who treats cats with everything from allergies to chronic cystitis and digestive disorders and even behavioral issues.

If you have a cat who doesn’t seem to be responding to the usual treatments and medications and needs care you can’t provide, you might start looking beyond the traditional. Perhaps you’ve seen a cat in the neighborhood who needs help—people do abandon cats when they move, cats run away or are unexpectedly carted or frightened away from what’s familiar to them. We’ve talked about cats who find their way home over many miles of terrain. But not all cats are GPS equipped. There are many ways to help these abandoned or lost cats.

There are holistic, rehab, and even hospice facilities for cats throughout the US. Heartland Cats in Nebraska, for example, offers rehab, hospice, foster care, and adoptions. I found two facilities in New Jersey who practice holistic rescue and rehab for cats. Here’s a list of others in many states: http://www.rescuecenters.com/cats.html

Some cats from these facilities graduate into important jobs. For example, there are 046cat-friendly drug and alcohol rehab centers for people. And, at least one prison (this one in Washington state), has a program where cats and inmates rehabilitate each other. And, of course, there’s nothing as healing to both child and cat as a snuggly, cuddle time at any shelter.

These are just a few of the jobs and purposes assigned to cats throughout the world. Tomorrow, we’ll feature more of them.

I’m guest blogger here this week. Check out my advice to authors: https://kristinastanley.com/2016/04/18/mystery-mondays-patricia-fry-on-shifting-genres/

Mindful Monday—A Tale of Two Cats

karens-kitties-0211I shared this story in this blog seven years ago. First I posted this picture of Catalina—this adora-dorable kitten who would melt anyone’s heart. The following week, I introduced Pumpkin.

Pumpkin is the same basic color as Catalina. He is also a cat. But, I can assure you that someone looking at his picture would not have the same reaction as they would when viewing the picture Catalina Kitten. I’m sure you would agree. And you would be correct.

Actually, the people I tested with the two photos were much, MUCH more adoring towardpumpkin Pumpkin. It’s true. Most people looked at the photo of Catalina and said, “Oh, how cute,” and then went on talking about something else. When I showed those same people the photo of Pumpkin and told them his story, they generally, hugged the photo to their chest. Some produced a few tears. My 27-year-old granddaughter said, “I love him,” and asked if we could adopt him and bring him home. (Yet, she’s allergic to cats.) Most were speechless as they took a moment to emotionally connect with this precious kitty. No one turned away in horror. Everyone I showed his picture to embraced Pumpkin in their hearts. Most will never forget him.

Who is Pumpkin? Where did he come from?

Well, I received him as a Valentine’s Day gift from a dear friend. She donates to a rescue organization and facility called Pasado’s Safe Haven located near Sultan, Washington. She “adopted” Pumpkin in my name with the promise of supporting his needs for as long as he needed the help.

Here’s Pumpkin’s story. A woman found this cat crawling in a gutter one cold and raining day. He was terribly thin, filthy, dehydrated and flea-ridden. He was missing an eye and his jaw had been broken and miraculously healed—albeit a little crooked. He looked like he had been tortured and even used as target practice, as there was evidence that he’d been shot with a pellet gun. This woman knew about Pasado’s Safe Haven and called them immediately. The volunteer rescue patrol couldn’t believe that the cat was still alive and the veterinarian and the emergency clinic didn’t offer much hope for him.

Now get out your box of tissues. This kitty did survive and they say that he is one of the “sweetest, calmest, most intelligent cats you could ever hope to meet.” How wonderful that he has found love. Even though he has tested positive for feline leukemia and hyperthyroidism, he is not considered by the folks at Pasado as a lost cause. Not even!!! He is so affectionate—they say, he loves chin scratches and ear kisses—that he lives in the People Barn with the staff at Pasado’s. And he also enjoys sharing their vegetarian lunches with them.

According to the information I received along with Pumpkin’s picture and story, I learned that Pasado’s Safe Haven is named for an older donkey who was tortured and killed by three teenage boys in 1992. At the time, the fine for such a crime was $50. After the donkey’s death, the founders of Pasado’s Safe Haven lobbied for passage of the Pasado Bill, which makes animal cruelty a felony in the state of Washington. They continue to be active in changing laws relating to animals and they also provide shelter, care and love for all kinds of animals. It sounds like a wonderful place for the 250 animals who reside on the 85 acres. And no animal lives in a kennel or cage. Don’t you love what these folks are doing? Sadly, their amazing and loving efforts are helping only a fraction of the animals throughout the U.S. who need help. Be sure to visit their site and learn more about Pumpkin and  all of his animal and human friends. https://www.pasadosafehaven.org.

I didn’t include Pumpkin’s story in my book, Catscapades, Tales of Ordinary and Extraordinary Cats. But I do feature a section on Throw-Away Cats. Here, you’ll find these stories: “Stories of Strays and Other Free-Roaming Cats,” “Memoirs of a Colony Cat,” “Ferals in the Woodshed,” “From Feral to Fabulous: Greta’s Story,” “The Secret Life of a Neighborhood Feral” and “Sophie’s From Rags to Riches Story.

Frivolous Friday—Funny Cat Videos

One of the inspirations for cats used in the stories.

One of the inspirations for cats used in the stories.

It’s estimated that 15 percent of things shared on the Internet involve a cat or cats. Cats are popular. While some people probably watch cat videos because they get a kick out of seeing cats struggle or being humiliated (shameful), most of us enjoy watching cute cat antics.

If you want to be entertained, use the keywords, “funny cats” and you’ll find more than enough videos to make your sides ache and your heart swell.

Wild (and Sometimes Crazy) Wednesday—The Adventures of a Klepto Cat

Smokey, AKA the Klepto Cat

Smokey, AKA the Klepto Cat

Rags is the cat featured most prominently in my Klepto Cat Mysteries. I thought it would be fun to share some of his adventures with you today. If you haven’t read all of the books yet or even any of them, you might be surprised at some of the situations this ordinary cat finds himself in. As we’ve established, he can’t “talk” himself out of these predicaments. He’s a cat, after all. But he has experiences most cats only dream of (or can’t possibly imagine).

In A Picture-Purrfect Christmas, he rides a horse in order to get to the area where he can find his missing friend, Marissa. No, he doesn’t jump on the horse and take hold of the reins. Savannah, his person, puts him in a soft carrier and lays it across the saddle. Then secures him on a leash and follows him to where Marissa is being held.

In Cat-Eye Witness, he witnesses a murder and, using his most cat-like qualities and instincts, he makes it clear who the culprit is. He earned acclaim from the local sheriff’s department for his efforts in this story.

In Meow for the Money, Rags finds a lost cat and stays with her all night keeping her Meow For Money-cover-final-1000pxwarm and safe until they are found in the morning.

In The Colony Cat Caper, his intense curiosity scores him a high five from authorities when he single-pawed finds some gems that have been missing for many years in an old abandoned building.

In Undercover Cat, Rags reveals a clue to where a friend might be held. Because of that, she is found and saved in the nick of time.

In Celebrity Cat Caper, he discovers a secret room at a local library where he’s a therapy cat for slow-readers. The room, of course, holds a secret someone hoped would never be revealed.

In Mansion of Meows, Rags discovers a dirty secret and caused complete havoc for a wealthy family who’d hoped to take their secret to the grave. His efforts freed a young man from a lifetime of imprisonment.

PAWSitively Sinister, a Klepto Cat MysteryIn PAWSitively Sinister, this amazing cat and his pawtner, Koko uncovered the most disturbing remains imaginable hidden deep in the belly of a beautiful mansion.

In the latest story, Cabin FURvor, Rags finds himself in serious trouble when he jumps out of a boat at night and lands on a dead body found floating in the lake. Need I say more to entice you to read this one?

Yes, leave it to Rags to cause a stir or stir up trouble. But he also has great instincts and a curiosity that won’t quit and he’s a likable cat that everyone loves, except, of course, the bad guys. Find all of the Klepto Cat Mysteries at amazon.com. http://amzn.to/1kAI8I2

Newsday Tuesday–Claws With a Cause

I remember on Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, my children asking, “Why don’t they have a special kid’s day?” Of course, I’d tell them it’s because every day is kid’s day—kids are always the priority.

The cat that inspired the book series

The cat that inspired the book series

Maybe you heard that yesterday was National Pet Day. Again, I must say—tongue in cheek, “Isn’t everyday special for our treasured pets?” But it’s okay with me if we’re all encouraged to pay them special recognition. They’re worth it. Be sure to visit some of the sites that celebrated National Pet Day yesterday. You’ll find interesting quotes, stories of fascinating pets, of course a lot of commercial hype, all related to the pets we love.

Today, I’d like to share some interesting facts I learned recently about a cat’s claws. It’s from the Soft Paws website. The article reminds us that a cat’s claws are not a frivolous feature nor are they designed primarily to sheer our favorite blouse or scratch us during rough play. A cat’s claws actually tools with a purpose—to catch and hold prey, tear meat from the bones, and to defend themselves as well as to climb away from danger.

A cat’s claws grow continuously. They keep them trimmed by walking on them and biting them, and they also shed the outer sheath of the claws from time to time. As the cat ages, however, they might need a little help with their claws. We’ve found this to be true in our own household. Especially for inside kitties, their claws don’t wear down as fast and they need help with their pedicures. It’s been our experience that the older cat develops thicker claws and sometimes they grow out of bounds. We had a Himalayan whose dewclaw (or thumb claw) grew so fast and ferocious that it grew into her pad, causing quite a bit of discomfort before we noticed the problem. So it’s important for cat owners to invest in a nail trimmer for cats and learn to use it on a regular basis. Duller points on those claws mean less wear and tear on your furniture, as well.

Do you have a young cat who frequently gets hung up on the screen door or you find hanging from the quilt on your bed? Just trim those tips off his front claws and you’ll both be happier.

No matter what kind of animal you have, a cat, dog, horse, pig, hamster, bunny, or goat, it is important to groom them regularly. Not only does this keep their coat and skin healthier, it helps to alert you when there’s a problem with their skin, eyes, claws (hooves), teeth, ears, etc. And grooming is another way to maintain that warm relationship you share with your pet.

Mindful Monday—Gifts for Special Occasions

Lily Posing With Catnapped

Lily Posing With Catnapped

I’m often asked, “Where can I buy the Klepto Cat Mysteries?” Today I respond.

Locally, Made in Ojai on Matilija Street and Book Ends Books and Collectibles on the corner of El Roblar and Pueblo in Meiners Oaks carry them. You can also purchase print copies at Chaucer’s Bookstore in Santa Barbara.

Order copies of the 13 print books from me at http://www.matilijapress.com/Klepto-Cat-Mysteries. And the 13 print and 16 Kindle versions are at Amazon.com. Here’s the quick link to my page at Amazon. http://amzn.to/1kAI8I2

Keep these books in mind for Mother’s Day, birthdays, as thank you gifts, graduation gifts, and other occasions that might come up throughout the year. You can start by reading (or giving) the first book in the series, Catnapped, or choose any book throughout the series as they are all stand-alone books. For a hint about which of the books you would prefer, check out the reviews for each book at my Amazon pages. http://amzn.to/1kAI8I2

They’re $8.95 for the print book (usually discounted at Amazon) and $2.99 for the Kindle. Order the print books from me or pick them up at a bookstore locally and you’ll likely get one that’s autographed.

I also offer note cards with pictures of some of the Klepto Cat covers. These are available at my website: http://www.matilijapress.com

Planning a vacation as soon as the weather clears up? Load your Kindle or other reader Meow For Money-cover-final-1000pxwith the Klepto Cat Mysteries (or buy print copies) to take on your trip. Read the books while traveling and pass them along to your host when you stopover to visit friends or relatives. Give a copy to your pet sitter before leaving town.

Those readers who like horses, will enjoy Corral Cat Caper. If you are an advocate of or you’re interested in caring for colony cats, read the Colony Cat Caper. As with all of the books there’s some mysterious things going on in the background. Artists and those who love hanging out in a beach community, might start with The Gallery Cat Caper. Are you into spooky other-worldly stories? Then you gotta read Mansion of Meows and don’t miss PAWSitively Sinister. Celebrity Cat Caper is crazy with unexpected twists and turns. Meow for the Money introduces some interesting new characters and a fun storyline. Catnapped, by the way, is based loosely on a true story of cats being taken from neighborhoods. A Picture-Purrfect Christmas is a sweet tear-jerker of a holiday story you’ll want to read again and again. And throughout all of the stories, you’ll enjoy fascinating and surprising cat action.

Frivolous Friday—Don’t Humiliate the Cats

I’m sure Lily and Sophie think of me as the crazy cat lady with a camera. I even have a magnet on my fridge proving it. But the furry girls put up with me anyway.

LilyLickingI’ve had my grandchildren tire of Nana paparazzi. One great granddaughter flat turns her back on me when she sees me coming with my camera. My oldest granddaughter once asked me to please leave my camera in the hotel room when we were visiting her college town. But the cats are usually at least mildly willing to perform for my camera. Here’s a cute shot I got of Lily as she cleaned herself up after lunch yesterday.

Speaking of cat photography I hope you read Bernadette’s comment about photographing black cats on Wednesday. She’s an artist and photographer with a lot of black cats.

In the meantime, would love to see your interesting cat photos and hear about some of your experiences photographing these wonderful beings.

In contrast to Lily’s silly photo, I decided to post one of my favorites of Lily and Sophie.

Lily and Sophie

Lily and Sophie

Sure look like they’ve had experience as run-way models, doesn’t it? Can you see why I couldn’t resist snapping this when I saw the two of them sitting next to the vase of flowers?

Bring Your Best Game Thursday–Our Responsibility to Our Cats

This is what I wrote at the end of my book of true cat stories, Catscapades. http://www.matilijapress.com

Smokey, the inspiration for this series

Smokey, the inspiration for this series

This is not a book to end all books on cats—not by any stretch of the imagination. This is just another pinpoint or dewdrop of stories, conjectures, thoughts, reminiscences and nostalgia about and on behalf of cats. My reason for writing this book is to entertain and educate while honoring some of the incredible felines I’ve had the privilege of knowing and knowing about over the years. I hope you enjoyed meeting some of my kitties and that their stories will endear you even more to your own furkids and those less fortunate kitties in your neighborhood or community that might need your help.

Cats are not all exactly the same. They come in different colors, styles, shapes, personalities, abilities and attitudes. Like humans, they are given varying challenges and gifts in their brief lives. While way too many of them live on their own—they’ve been abandoned, neglected, discarded or otherwise betrayed by humans—many others are lovingly pampered. I believe that every kitty on this planet should live within an aura of love. Let’s make a promise to the felines we know to cherish and protect each and every one of them.

For a professional’s perspective on photographing black cats, read Bernadette’s comment karens-kitties-0211on yesterday’s post. I believe she has only black cats and she photographs them often, as you’ll see at her site: http://thecreativecat.net  Scroll down to find several black cats.

Wild (and Sometimes Crazy) Wednesday—Cat photography

Cats may well be the most photographed animal around. Statistics show that 15 percent of the videos circulating the Internet are cat-related. And, I’m pretty sure, that some of them are flukes. It’s not easy for an amateur photographer to capture a cat’s personality through photography.  But some cats are easier to photograph than others. Particularly challenging to photograph are the black cat and the white cat.

winfieldIMG_1781We once had a white cat with one blue and one green eye. He was stunning. But to get a nice picture of him, we had to call in a professional photographer. Close ups were difficult because, if I set my camera on automatic, it wouldn’t focus on his white fur. I eventually discovered that I could get a nice closeup shot of Winfield if I’d focus first on one of his eyes.

Black cats are also difficult to photograph.  BrucieKittyMy experience is, if the background is light and the cat’s eyes are open, you can get a fairly decent photo. But the lighting has to be right to see the details in the cat’s face. Yesterday, I came across a tip saying to get a better picture of a black cat, use a blue background. Would appreciate hearing about your experiences.

Photobombing.

This morning, I learned a new phrase—photobombing. My Cat-A Day calendar for today shows an adorable kitten posing for the photo and a kitten in the background (would you believe a black kitten) has his tongue sticking out. The black kitten is photobombing. I guess this is the name they’ve applied to situations when someone put rabbit ears behind the person next to them as a photo is being taken or, as has happened to me a time or two, when someone walks into a photo you’re taking or posing for. Once, a friend was taking a picture of me and another friend in front of a sign in Colorado when we felt someone join us. Now we have a photo of us and a random fellow who decided crash into the moment. Of course, we all got a kick out of it.

While researching photobombing, I came across a photo of a family at a marine park standing in front of the dolphin window and there’s a dolphin photobombing with what appears to be a big smile on his face. There was a shot of a steer at a distance, with another steer barely in the picture peering into the camera–obviously a last minute decision on the steer’s part.

Tell us about your photo-bombing experiences—especially those with animals.

And while you’re visiting the web today, be sure to check out my newest book review for my first book—Catnapped. This reviewer, Alice Holland, is new to the series and vows to read more of the books.
