Newsday Tuesday – Where to go for a Little Kitty-Cat Love

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We’ve told you about the Huffington Post’s cat section. I hope you’ve visited. Most recently, there were stories about a sweet cat who comforted a dog who was frightened of fireworks, and tips for how to tell if your cat is aging gracefully, and what your dog really wants to tell you about your cat. There’s also a sweet story about a black cat who walked into a zoo in Folsom, CA and made friends with a black bear. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/news/cats

I’ve posted about the Pussington Post where you’ll find more stories about cats in the news. http://pussingtonpost.com

What I didn’t know is that the New York Times also has a section for us cat fans

Here’s another neat site—Cats Info offers cats in the news stories, cat quotes, cat quizzes, cat facts and even cat books. http://www.catsinfo.com

Mindful Monday – Cats Can Increase Your Productivity

CatfaceIMG_1972Okay, here it is—something you’ve been waiting for—permission to watch cat videos on your computer instead of working! Researchers from the University of Indiana have found that watching videos of cute cats actually helps improve your mood, increases your energy, and tends to enhance your productivity. Check out the report here:

http://news.indiana.edu/releases/iu/2015/06/internet-cat-video-research.shtml

One entrepreneurial consultant suggests that his readers and clients should watch cat videos to increase their writing output.

https://www.quicksprout.com/2016/06/13/how-to-write-5-or-more-articles-a-week-and-not-burn-out/

What do you think? Are adorable cat videos (which make up 15 percent of all videos on thelilywritingIMG_1705 internet) inspiring or distracting? Do they foster your productivity or sidetrack you?

I find that I often need a break from whatever project I’m working on and cat videos would be my diversion of choice. However, one can become caught up in the cuteness and have trouble finding her way back to the project at hand.

Frivolous Friday – Dressing Kitty

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

How many people do you know who dress their pets? I think most of us, when we were kids, if we had access to cats and doll clothes, we attempted to dress the most willing cat we could find. If your experience was like most, you probably got a scratch or two out of it.

Some adults still play dress-up with their pets for a variety of reasons—to keep them warm on a chilly day, to make them stand out from the rest, or just for the pure pleasure of it. Earlier this week, I introduced you to a woman who has created a brand for herself and her cat as the couture cat. She has a blog and she travels with her exquisitely-dressed cat to various pet-related events. She says it’s to create awareness for cat causes.

What kind of cats are most forgiving when it comes to dressing them? I’m not sure there are particular breeds. However, those I’ve seen dressed are of the hairless or short-hair variety. Coco, the couture cat, is a Cornish Rex. In a previous post, we talked about two Sphinx who like to dress up (or who tolerate it).

Where do cat dressers find cat clothing? You might be surprised at how easy it is to find clothes for cats. Check out Coco’s Couture Cat site for a list of designers:

Here are some additional sites with clothes for cats.

If you are so inclined, also check your local PetSmart pet stores and the pet department in any department store.

Wild (and Sometimes Crazy) Wednesday—Interesting Pets!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

As I packed for the Cat Writers/Blog Paws Conference ten days ago, I didn’t expect to meet up with so many unusual pets. There was a pair of poodles; one blind and one deaf. I met some hairless cats and learned they’re Sphinx. There was Lexi Liu (originally from South Africa) and Moshe Moshi from Canada. These two lovelies appeared most days in full dress. Without clothing, they’re virtually naked. Learn more about Lexi and Moshe at their website, Naked and Hungry: http://www.nakedandhungry.com/

I was intrigued by a therapy rat named Jasper. His handler, Abby, trained him to a harness

and, throughout the conference, he was attached to a leash whenever he wasn’t in his cage. He wore a black bowtie for the red carpet parade of pets on our last evening in Arizona. How does Abby plan to use Jasper as a therapy animal? She has found that when she’s out and about with him, people are fascinated. They love holding him and they smile upon seeing him. On her website, she asks, “Would having a rat to cuddle be comforting to you?” Learn more about Jasper and Abby’s other therapy rats here: http://www.healingwhiskers.com

One attendee had two white ferrets—gosh were they ever cute and well-behaved, too. They traveled with a dog (or was it a cat?) in a pet stroller. They, too, dressed for the red carpet parade.

But one of the most well-dressed pets was Coco, the Couture Cat. Evidently, this cat, along with her driver, attends fundraising pet fashion events, pet blogging conferences, and cat shows as a pet-me cat in her pink CATillac. According to her personal assistant, Teri, Coco brought about 20 outfits for the weekend event in Chandler, AZ, plus tiaras, hats, necklaces, bejeweled leashes and glasses. http://www.cococouturecat.com. Coco was stunning, as were many other cats and dogs all dressed and wearing bows, hats, sunglasses, and even lovely bracelets and necklaces. It’s no wonder there were so many smiling faces in the hallways, the workshops, and the dining room throughout the weekend event.

Newsday Tuesday—Some Interesting Pet Products

Muffins Halo wings for poppyWhile I was at the Cat Writers/Blog Paws Conference a little over a week ago, I saw a lot of commercial exhibits, including new-to-me products. Probably the most surprising and unusual was Muffin’s Halo—a Guide for Blind Dogs. You put this on your blind dog and it protects him/her from bumping into walls and other hard surfaces. What an amazing invention. I met two poodles who were wearing the Muffin’s Halo—one was blind and the other deaf. http://www.muffinshalo.com

I spoke with a man who spent the conference walking around with a litter box filled with

litter. No kidding. And he seemed to be enjoying himself immensely. He was promoting a Lucy Products, Cats Incredible litter. http://www.lucyproducts.com.

I learned about Calming Collars. These are quite attractive collars designed to help calm cats and dogs who are stressed or fearful, offer comfort for those with motion sickness, and cool an overheated pet. http://www.calmingcollars.com

I saw Pawbreakers for cats. This is actually a treat in ball form that the cat can actually play with. She’s attracted to it because of the ingredients, which are all supposed to be safe and healthy for cats. It’s billed as candy for cats—but it isn’t actually candy. http://www.edibleanimaltreats.com

And then there was the Sleepypod, a mobile pet bed designed to keep pets safe when traveling. http://sleepypod.com

Be sure to check these products out for your pets.

Mindful Monday – A Pet-Friendly Conference. And Protect Your Pets on the 4th!

cwamemarciI just returned from a 10-day vacation. You didn’t even miss me, did you? That’s because I wrote my blog posts ahead of time and scheduled them to post each day while I was gone. One phase of my trip took me to Chandler, Arizona, to the Wild Horse Pass Resort for the annual Cat Writers/Blog Paws Conference. What a trip! The place was filled with lovely people—most of whom are writers/bloggers or artists focusing on cats and dogs. And the most charming aspect of the event was the fact that you could bring your pet to the conference. I’ve attended numbers of conferences over the years and I’ve never seen so many conference attendees smiling.

How could you not smile upon seeing an adorable dog or kitten, even a ferret or a therapy CWA1rat in a stroller, on a leash, or in someone’s arms in the hallways, the workshops, and even the dining room? This week, I’d like to share pictures from this event along with some of the occurrences, interesting sponsored products, and information I garnered over this incredible weekend.

Today, I’ve posting a photo of me with our Cat Writers president, Marci Kladnik. Oh, I forgot to mention that we also wear our finest pet-related clothing and jewelry and, in turn, some of the animals are dressed in human-like clothing. No one can say that members of the Cat Writers Association or Blog Paws don’t have a sense of whimsy and a sense of humor. And boy do we love our pets!

A Note About Fireworks and Keeping Your Pets Safe and Calm

AlyzayBirthday3 078Those of us with cats know how independent they can be, while also very much needing the human influence, whether they know it or not. While some cats crave attention, others appear aloof. But in today’s world, cats are hard-pressed to care for themselves in all ways. They need us to give them shelter, sustenance, and affection (or at least attention). Sometimes we must intervene when they’re ill or injured. And the cats living in our homes can use some assistance when it comes to protecting them from the sounds occurring this weekend.

If you live near a community fireworks display or if it’s legal to set off fireworks (not in drought-ravaged California), stay with your pets, hire someone to stay with them, or board them on the other side of town.

Use Feliway spray or plug-in to keep cats calm. Turn on the radio or TV to mask the sounds of fireworks, or try a Thundershirt for cats or dogs. http://www.thundershirt.com

Our resident cats, Sophie and Lily, react to the sound of the trash truck, construction, the vacuum cleaner, and thunder, but fireworks don’t phase them. Go figure!

Frivolous Friday–…And All She Brought Me Was This…

LilyToysI’m returning home today from a road trip and the Cat Writers Association Conference. (I’ll tell you all about it next week). As usual, I’m bringing Lily a gift. Lily has a basketful of small stuffed toys. Some, she stole out of the grandchildren’s toy box, some were mine, but most of them I brought to her when traveling or on an outing—a stuffed eagle from an event at the local raptor center, a baby grizzly bear from Alaska, a little lion from large-cat sanctuary I visited, for instance. And when I attend the annual Cat Writer’s Association Conference, the sponsors donate a variety of cat toys and other products for speakers and attendees. So the cats will be happy to see me return with a new stash for them. It’s cute—the cats will sort of line up and watch the show when I start revealing all that I brought them.

Do you bring your cats gifts when you travel?

Thoughts for Thursday—Don’t Leave Me Behind

birdsmoms-004Some cats have a little or a lot of separation anxiety. There are things you can do to help calm and/or appease them (while lessening your own guilt for leaving them). Those sad eyes get me every time when Lily knows I’m going to travel someplace. She gets in my suitcase and gives me the sad eye-treatment. Some cats act out—cause some sort of problem when her human is gone.

What can you do when your cat seems to suffer from separation anxiety? Get her a companion cat. Leave an item of your recently-worn clothing on the bed or their favorite chair. Turn on the radio or TV while you’re gone. Have someone come in and spend time with her each day while you’re gone. Have your pet sitter keep to your routine as much as possible—feed at the same time, for example and in the same place the cats are used to being fed.

Here’s a great article from a cat behaviorist that should be helpful. http://www.catbehaviorassociates.com/separation-anxiety-in-cats/

Wild (and Sometimes Crazy) Wednesday—Do You Know Where Your Cat Is?

Smokey, the inspiration for this series

Smokey, the inspiration for this series

Yesterday, we became educated about microchipping cats and this always brings up the debate about cats being kept inside as opposed to roaming outside. I think we all love the vision of a cat in nature—chasing a butterfly in his own backyard, rolling among a bed of tulips, hanging close when you work in your garden, etc. But it has been proven that cats live longer when kept inside under sanitary and healthy conditions.

There are many dangers outside—predators, traffic, poisonous plants, mean-spirited neighbors, poisoned rodents, etc. I’ve known cats who have become accidentally locked in a neighbor’s garage or shed, who stepped into a delivery truck and were carted off to strange lands, or who were frightened by a loose dog and chased to an unfamiliar or hazardous area. I had a cat once who left home because we got a dog. He lived out his life with neighbors across the street.

Some of the complaints we hear about keeping cats inside are the obvious—they claw the

furniture, some miss the litterbox, and so forth. Litter boxes are a hassle, but one that a cat-loving human can easily adjust to. Some cats, however, come with problems that can cause havoc in a household—they climb drapes. Some chew plastic (including your electronic cables), others swallow string and ribbon (a disaster for a seamstress or avid crocheter, for example), they shed—oh my how they shed. My mother used to always—I mean always—have a lovely bouquet of flowers in a vase on her dining room table. Not since Smokey moved in, however. This cat knocks the vases over and makes a mess for her to clean up. There are definite adjustments you must make for inside kitties.

And there are also compromises—some of them beautifully done. You can build a screened-in outdoor area attached to your home for the cats who want to sun themselves in nature. Make it as large or small as you want and as elaborate—with plants, cat trees, tunnels, hammocks, etc.
