Mindful Monday – Where the Cats Do the Hiring

In England, the Pause Cat Café is hiring and the cats are conducting the interviews. It’s true, they’re having a speed-dating type recruitment event where potential employees come in and meet the cats. Those recruits who are most adored by the cats will get the jobs.

At Pause Cat Café, they have 12 cats, 10 staff members, and 45 volunteers. While the cats are able to mingle with customers in the restaurant area, each cat has its own room where he can go to chill. And every cat has a mum or a dad so they have consistent care and interaction. That person can tell when the cat is not feeling well, she’s losing weight, etc. There’s a specialist on hand to tend to the cats, and staff takes turns spending night with them—so they’re never completely alone.

They have quite a large vegetarian menu at Pause Cat Café, which is kind of unusual by American cat café standards. Usually, you’re served coffee and snacks. Read more about this interesting cat café here: https://www.thepurringtonpost.com/pause-cat-cafe/

You may be interested in knowing, the first cat café was opened in Taiwan in 1998. Now there are cat cafés all over the world—with 79, at last count, in Japan. The first one in the US opened in 2014 in the bay area. Cat cafés are now open throughout the US, but the style and regulations are different than in most other countries.

We have stricter regulations here. For example, the cats cannot be roaming in the same area where people are eating—they’re kept in a separate section of the restaurant or coffee shop. Sometimes there’s a fee for mingling in the cat area. And usually the cats are up for adoption.

Have you visited a cat café? I have yet to do it, even though there is a one just thirty miles away from me in Camarillo, CA. It’s called the Purrfect Cat Café. You can spend an hour with five adult cats and four kittens for $10. And to keep from overwhelming the kitties, only 8 people can enter the cat area at a time. They also have a gift shop and they’ll arrange for private parties. I will get over there at some point and report on the experience for you. In the meantime, I’d love to hear your cat café stories.

Frivolous Friday – The Cats of Asia

Cats are big in Japan. The Japanese people have kept cats as pets for over a thousand years. And some of our iconic cats hail from Japan. Hello Kitty, for example, and the waving cat—the one that beckons people into businesses. Some call it the good-luck cat. You’ve probably seen this ceramic cats for sale and promptly displayed in many businesses, in particular those within the Asian culture. The original white and red cat invites wealth, prosperity, good luck. But now there’s also red (to ward off illness), black (to protect from evil), and other colors. I have one of the originals—she’s waving and holding a gold coin. I bought it on my first trip to Hawaii years ago.

Yes, cats are popular in Japan. But did you know that a calico once saved a train? Evidently, the electric train servicing a small community from Wakayama City to Kishi Station—all of eight miles (14 kilometers), was failing. So some forward-thinking businessmen decided to hire Tama, a calico cat belonging to a local merchant, to lure passengers. And boy did it work.

They built the station to resemble a cat. (Check it out at the link provided.) The train is completely decorated with Tama’s image inside and out and so is the coffee and souvenir shop in the station.

As the story goes, the train station was closed for lack of passengers in 2004. It reopened in 2007 with Tama as stationmaster. She’s even been photographed wearing an engineer’s cap and badge and boy did she begin pulling in the crowds. People come from all over to ride the trains—yes, there are more than one now—the Strawberry Train, Tama Train, and Toy Train.

Tama died at the age of 16 in 2015, but her assistant Nitama is carrying on. So if you’re ever in Japan, don’t forget to buy a Hello Kitty, a Good-Luck Cat and take a ride on Tama’s famous train. http://travel.cnn.com/cat-saves-japanese-train-station-586471/

Yes, the Japanese love their cats, but in Korea, they’re mingling with animals of a wilder kind. Have you read about the raccoon café that opened in Seoul? Evidently those who were there for the winter Olympics enjoyed their coffee while hanging out with tame raccoons.

Thoughts for Thursday – Fascinating Cat Facts

We’re learning more about cats and that’s because we’re paying more attention and we’re sharing what we’re learning through the internet. Because cats are so interesting, fun, cute, charming, silly—they’ve taken over uTube and many other sites. And behaviorists and scientists are speaking up more about cats. Here are a few cat facts you might find interesting.

A cat’s average life expectancy now is 10-15 years for an indoor male and 14-16 years for an indoor female. The oldest living cat died at age 38. And various breeds might have a different life expectancy. Basically, the American shorthair and the Siamese life expectancy is 15-20 years and the cats with the longest life expectancy are the European Shorthair and the Balinese, who can live to be 18-22 years old. Check out this chart for some idea of your cat’s life expectancy.  https://www.petcarerx.com/article/the-average-lifespan-of-a-cat-breed-by-breed-chart/1698

Here’s another fascinating fact. Cats have been around nearly 10,000 years and all domestic cat breeds descended from one single species: the African Wildcat.

There are domestic cats on every continent except Antarctica.

Purring takes a cat to her happy place. While a cat purrs when she is content, she also uses her purr mechanism for self healing and to calm herself when she’s stressed.

A cat licks for a variety of reasons. The cat’s saliva contains a natural antibiotic, so it is beneficial for her to lick a wound. Cats also lick their fur to keep cool.

Wild (and Sometimes Crazy) Wednesday – New Book Coming: Count the Days!

You’ll be happy to know that you’re just days away from being able to order both the Kindle and the print version of the newest Klepto Cat Mystery. We’ve focused on predictions all week—so I’ll predict that the latest book, The ImPAWssible Mission, will be available by this time next week—hopefully sooner. I will make the announcement here and at the Klepto Cat Mystery facebook page.

I was particularly eager to bring you this book (number 28) ASAP because it is a close continuation of Book 27, Secrets, Trickery, and Meows. As you might recall, in this book, Rags ups his game when he discovers clues to a seventy-year-old crime. Rags leads his family to a missing cat and, despite serious challenges, saves her from certain death. A friendship develops and Rags drags his new friend, Lucy-kitty into the discovery of the century. Everyone’s on edge when threats appear from out of nowhere and they’re baffled by the appearance of exquisite vintage jewelry. When Savannah and her sister-in-law, Holly, can’t leave well enough alone, they, along with Rags and Lucy, become tangled in a web of mystery and suspense. But there are more questions than answers as the case and the clues seem to follow the Iveys back to California. Who blew up the Airbnb the Iveys had rented in Colorado? Who took the stash of exquisite jewelry from the obvious hiding place? Is the man Savannah suspects behind the blatant crimes or is it someone she is yet to meet? This story will entertain, amuse, and tantalize you.

As most of you know, we left you with a cliff hanger. Book 28, The ImPAWssible Mission tells the rest of the story. In this book, Rags claws his way into more mischief. Savannah and her unpredictable klepto cat, Rags, help the detective in his search for valuable antique jewelry. Who took it, who has it, who does it actually belong to? Follow Rags and his humans as they uncover long-held secrets in some of the most unexpected places and meet the people who harbor them. As the mystery unfolds, Rags continues to lead the charge to some startling discoveries and toward a most unexpected conclusion.

Hopefully you just can’t wait to find out what Rags has in store for you. I’m eager to share it with you. So watch for the big announcement. I’ll also be sending a promo piece to your email box within the next few weeks. Lily, Sophie, and I are planning a contest. So keep your eye peeled for the details.

The gorgeous book covers are designed by Bernadette Kazmarski!!

Newsday Tuesday – More on Animal Weather-Forecasters

We all agree that animals are amazing. Well, to us they are. Although, what they do that’s so amazing is rather second nature to them. Animals are much more aware of their surroundings than we are. Their natural instincts when it comes to nature and her seasons are many times more sensitive than ours—unless you have arthritis or bursitis, etc. Then changes in the barometer can certainly affect you.

As Dr. Nicholas Dodman, Professor of animal behavior at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine says, “It’s not that animals have a sixth sense, their senses are more acute than those of humans.” Animals can pick up on pressure changes as well as scents indicating a pending storm, for example.

Yesterday we covered some of the activities and reactions we might see in animals when the weather is about to turn bad. Here are a few more: Some say that a cat will eat grass before a rain. Fish bite more before a rain, but I’ve also heard that a light rain on the water will bring fish to the surface. Frogs croak louder, birds fly closer to the ground, cows lie down to keep the spot dry, and dogs become restless when a rain storm is pending.

There’s a saying that goes, “When sheep gather in huddles, tomorrow there will be puddles.”

Here are a few more sites showing how cats and other animals predict the weather. https://www.quora.com/How-do-cats-predict-weather-esp-rain-to-a-reasonable-degree-of-accuracy

Mindful Monday – Want to Know the Forecast? Ask Your Cat!

Weather’s in the news this week—chilling snow storms in the East and rain in the West. But you were prepared, weren’t you? You had plenty of food in the house. Your rain barrel was ready to catch the water runoff. You’d brought in your patio furniture and the kids’ bicycles. And all because of your cat, right? You had plenty of warning about the coming storm if you paid close attention to your cat.

It’s no secret that even science looks to animals when it comes to predicting weather. How many years have they been relying on Punxsutawney Phil, for example? I remember my dad checking to see what the cows were doing on his way to his favorite fishing spot. As I recall, if they were lying down, probably the fish weren’t biting.

So what do cats have to do with predicting weather? Do they really know when it’s going to rain cats and dogs? According to some, yes they do. H.H.C Dunwoody may be the first to have recorded folklore and facts featuring this concept in his book, Weather Proverbs (1883).

In early years, cats were a part of a ship’s crew and sailors began paying attention to the correlation between the ship’s cats’ actions and the weather. Basically, Sailors observed that if a cat was frisky, it would be windy; if they licked their fur against the grain, it was going to hail; and one sneeze from a cat meant rain.

At one point in history, black cats meant rain. Is that part of the superstition about a black cat crossing your path bringing bad luck? I guess it depends on whether you hope for rain or dread it.

Dunwoody also wrote that a cat snoring meant bad weather coming. If a cat washes his head behind his ears, it’s going to rain. And when he lies on his back, it will be a storm. A cat washing his face while facing away from the fireplace indicates a winter thaw.

Some experts say that animals seem to prepare for a disaster more methodically than people do. Snakes will come out of hibernation. Cats will move to higher ground. And animals are thought to sense when an earthquake is about to strike.

Here’s an interesting site offering more information and suppositions regarding your cat as a weather forecaster. Jayme Kinsey at PetHelpful says that cats are better than dogs when sensing changes in the weather, but she adds, “I’ve yet to meet a cat that didn’t act strangely before a storm or other type of bad weather. The trick is knowing which behavior is odd for a cat.”

I have to report that as I write this post on an early Saturday morning here in Southern California, Lily-kitty is snuggled in my lap. She doesn’t crawl into my lap very often, but I’ve noticed that when she does it’s definitely when we’re experiencing or expecting a cold snap. Our temps have been in the mid to high 70s during the day. Rain is predicted and our temps will definitely drop. Yup, she’s right on target and I’m the lucky recipient of her cuddles.

Frivolous Friday – The Homeless Helping the Homeless

Not such a frivolous topic:

Yesterday we touched on homeless people helping homeless pets. You have to wonder how they connect. Where do homeless people get their pet cats, dogs, birds, etc.? Most probably can’t afford the adoption fee. I suppose in some cases, they simply stumble across a stray cat or dog and the two start hanging out together. There was a man living homeless in California a few years ago with a dog, a cat, and a bird. He was quite the spectacle as he traveled with his pets.

Do the homeless take good care of their pets? I believe that most do. If you or I saw a dog or cat that looked sickly or too thin, or, heaven forbid, it was being abused, we’d call for help. But it appears that most homeless become highly devoted caretakers to their animal friends. There’s a video online showing a dog chasing after an ambulance carrying his homeless human off to a hospital. I only hope someone rescued the dog and that he and his human were reunited at some point.

Here’s a touching story I hope all of you will read. It’s about a homeless man who befriended not only an alley full of thirty cats, but also many of his neighbors who lived in plush homes around him in a Chicago neighborhood. People liked Antonio Garcia and didn’t mind him living homeless in their neighborhood. In fact, some offered him warmer sleeping bags and a tent to make his life easier. But he declined. He’d say, “If you want to help, help the cats.” And they did, also doing what they could for Antonio. They even arranged for the cats to be spayed and neutered.

Well, Antonio died in January of hypothermia. When neighbors learned of his death, they picked up where he left off and began caring for his beloved cats. It’s a heartwarming story. Read it here: http://www.stltoday.com/lifestyles/pets/a-homeless-man-died-leaving-behind-a-pack-of-alley/article_42f5150f-1b17-5765-adee-45e312e32129.html

Thoughts for Thursday – Homeless Pets for Homeless People: How’s That Working?

Are you’re concerned when seeing homeless people living on the streets with pets? Do you wonder if the pet is being well cared for—what sort of life is this for a domestic animal, anyway? Here’s an organization designed to intervene in this area. In fact they encourage pets for the homeless and help them take good care of the animal. Take a look and see what you think: https://www.petsofthehomeless.org/

In Book 22 of my Klepto Cat Mystery series, A Christmas to Purr About, Michael opens a clinic during a Thanksgiving feast for the homeless to give free vet checks and treatment for their pets. You may recall that Rags helps that day as their therapy cat to sooth frightened pooches and kitty-cats.

If you’re ever concerned about pets living with the homeless—here’s an interesting article featuring why the homeless need pets. https://www.good.is/articles/homeless-people-pets-bias It’s eye-opening. They say that pets can help homeless people feel more stable. Homeless people with pets are less likely to become a problem within society. For some, the pet is the only friend they have and it can make a huge difference in the quality of the homeless person’s life. I think we can all relate to that concept. And if the pet is being well-cared for, it is certainly a plus for the otherwise homeless animal.
