Paws Up for Wednesday – What’s Happening in the Cozy Mystery Factory

We work full-time around here and just about every day of the year. So what’s going on here this month? We just got Olivia’s Book 16 back from the editor, and we’re putting the final touches on that book. Meanwhile, I have finished the first rough draft of Book 66 of the Klepto Cat Mysteries, That means we’ll most likely publish a new Calico Cat Mystery around the first part of October with a new Klepto Cat Mystery following later in the month.

To date this year, we’ve published 9 books for your reading pleasure. We’ve taken you to Greece, on a mountain adventure, to a very special wedding and we’ve introduced new characters, including an old owl and a lot of kittens.

Olivia and Rags have been working and playing hard while helping people and animals in these charming cozies. Be sure to catch up on both series—there may be another beloved holiday story on the horizon. I know that you readers love a touching holiday story.

What is our goal for the year here in the factory? We’ll definitely hit 10 published books this year—maybe more and we plan the same for next year. We hope to continue bringing you sweet and sassy mysteries that make you laugh and touch your heart strings. Why? Because we have such a wide base of fans hungry for more of Olivia and Rags, and because I’m having the time of my life creating these stories for you.

Meowy Monday—Happy Cat Month

How can we resist paying attention to Happy Cat Month? We all want our cats to be happy. In fact we go to great lengths to make sure our cats are happy—keeping their food coming, making sure they get plenty of petting and other attention, accommodating their whims (“Move, Mommy, so I can lie next to you—or in your spot” or “toss my feather-ball toy. I want to chase my feather-ball toy.”)

What about treats? I think every cat person’s favorite part of the day is treat time because treats make our cats sooooo happy.

I want to plan a little get-away and I was considering making it tomorrow. However, I heard that our next door neighbors are starting a construction project that day—yes, on the side right next to our house and Olivia does not like that kind of noise. I’ll be staying home to comfort her.

I’ll probably also bring out a little catnip while the pounding and scraping is going on. Catnip puts Olivia in her happy place and when Olivia’s happy, Mama’s happy.

What makes your cat happy?

Feline Fun Friday – Celebrate an Orange Tabby Day

Today is Ginger Cat Appreciation Day. Have you ever had an orange tabby—or ginger cat? I’ve known several. Most of them I’ve known are wonderful pets—mellow and sweet, clever and funny—real people cats.

I knew one nasty beast of a ginger cat. Oh, was he a terror. His family loved him, but he terrorized the neighborhood—inviting petting, then attacking with vengeance. He attacked children and he even broke into a house and assaulted an elderly cat that was napping. Were we ever glad when that family and that cat moved out of our neighborhood.

Did you know that all orange cats are tabbies and that there is no orange tabby or ginger cat breed. However, there are orange tabbies in many breeds—Maine coon, Persian, British shorthair, American curl, Turkish angora and more.

Here’s another interesting tidbit about the ginger cat: seventy-five percent of orange tabbies are male.

If you have a ginger cat or know one, how about giving him or her a special treat or hug or an affectionate scratch around the neck this week.

Paws Up for Wednesday—Heroic Cats

We all love a good happy-ending story. When it involves cats—even BETTER. Here’s a site featuring 13 stories of real-life cat heroes.

Cats will often stand up for us or for a child that’s being bullied by another cat, another child or a dog. A cat named Tara sure didn’t just stand by when her person was attacked by a dog. She went after the dog, who quickly ran off.

A cat named Tom actually alerted his human to the fact that she had a form of cancer. She was so concerned about the way her cat was behaving that she took him to the vet. It was the vet who suggested maybe the cat was trying to tell her something. A doctor visit confirmed—the cat had accurately diagnosed her cancer.

Maybe you’ve read about the cat that found an abandoned baby in a box and climbed into it with the baby, keeping it warm until it was rescued. This cat actually saved the baby’s life and maybe vice versa.

There are cats that have alerted their family to a fire in the house, and those that have called attention to an ailing family member who needed help.

Some cats save lives or restore lives simply by being—has there ever been a time in your life when a cat companion seemed to come along just when you needed that kitty-cat love and affection and support? There are many instances where a cat and a human connect just when they needed that connection the most. In fact, I believe all cats are heroes—how many cats in your life have given you an emotional or even physical boost just be being a part of your life? Here’s the link to heroic cats. Enjoy.

Meowy Monday – Rainbow Bridge Appreciation Day

Today is Rainbow Bridge Appreciation Day—a day to remember those cats and dogs we loved and who have gone to that special place we call the Rainbow Bridge. Deborah Barnes, former president and active member in the Cat Writer’s Association, founded Rainbow Bridge Appreciation Day in honor of one of her beloved cats.

It’s not hard for any of us who has loved a cat to bring him or her into our memory today and, in fact, every day of the year. Cherish those memories today. And cherish the cats still in your life.

There are several renditions to the poem about the Rainbow Bridge. Here is one of them: Try not to weep. I couldn’t read it through without tearing up.

“Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. Their bright eyes are intent. Their eager body quivers. Suddenly they begin to run from the group, flying over the green grass, their legs carrying them faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. (This is where I lose it—how about you?)

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….”

Feline Fun Friday—Cats in Strange Places

You just never know where you’re liable to find a cat—in a paper bag or box, sleeping in a shoe or a boot, hiding in a tree or flowerpot, under the bed, in a closet, snoozing in a file drawer or a lingerie drawer…

I enjoy photographing cats in strange places and doing interesting things as I take my daily walk around the neighborhood—while traveling or visiting someone. Just for fun here are a few recent photos I’ve snapped of neighborhood cats doing what cats do—climbing on things, sneaking up on things, and doing other things.

Paws Up for Wednesday — New Klepto Cat Mystery

Rags faces a monster of a mystery.

Oversized black cats are showing up in the most unexpected places and no one knows where they’re coming from. Savannah and Rags find themselves caught up in this bizarre mystery when an enjoyable horseback ride turns into a nightmare. Savannah and her friends are held captive and Rags is taken, but he escapes and leads the charge to the potential culprits, who are obviously hiding something, but what? At the same time there are reports of a monster with fur and four legs roaming the hills and neighborhoods. It isn’t until this stranger-than-fiction character shows up on the Iveys’ property that they begin to get answers to solving this CATastrophic mystery.

This is number 65 in the Klepto Cat series and my 80th cozy mystery total.

Meowy Monday – National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day

Most of us take our cats to a veterinarian for wellness checks once a year, to get their booster vaccines, and anytime they appear under the weather or have sustained an injury, for example.

On National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day you might consider getting your cat chipped. What does this mean? A tiny rice-size chip is implanted just under the skin and it is programmed with the cat’s name, your name, and your contact information. Should your cat get out and get lost or be taken, anyone can take the cat to any veterinarian to have him checked for a chip. If he has one, you are liable to get your cat back. That would be a happy day.

Cats that aren’t supposed to get out sometimes do—when there are visitors in your home, especially small children, who don’t always remember to close doors behind them. Cats escape when you’re getting a delivery that has to be brought inside, or when you have workers inside—remodeling your kitchen or bathroom, for example. Moving day provides numerous opportunities for a cat to slip out. If it happens at your new residence there’s a good chance that the cat could get lost.

Cats also push too hard on screens and fall or jump out windows.

People take cats, cats that are allowed out of doors and cats are sometimes chased by a dog or another cat and get too far from home.

You may be able to relate to one of many of these possible scenarios. I sure can. So if you have not yet done so, this would be a good week to take your cat to the vet even if all she needs is a chip to keep her safe.

Interesting tidbit—the first veterinarians were known to care for animals as early as 3200 BC. The first veterinary college was established in the United Kingdom in 1844 and the first veterinary school in the US opened in 1879.

Today there are over 120,000 veterinarians practicing in the United States.

Feline Fun Friday – A Cat’s Eyes

Don’t you love looking into your cat’s eyes? There’s depth and a knowingness in there. Of all the animals in the world, the cat probably has the most expressive and interesting eyes. Then there’s the eye color. Zowie, some are so striking—the greens, blues, golds/copper. I recently snapped this picture of this gold cat with eyes that match her fur. Stunning! And I read where this is rare—the copper/orange eye color for cats is rare. As is blue for an adult cat.

I’ve seen cats with turquoise eyes—stunning. And one of the most unusual cats we ever had was a white, odd-eye cat with one brilliant blue eye and a gorgeous green eye. It was difficult to capture the true colors in any photo we tried to take of Winfield.
