Klepto Cat Mysteries

Lily is waiting patiently for the next book

Lily is waiting patiently for the next book

I’ve done my part to bring you more Klepto Cat Mysteries, but I’m waiting for others to do the processes I haven’t learned to do—prepare the book for Kindle, create a cover design, etc.

Hopefully, next week, book six, The Celebrity Cat Caper will be on Kindle. The Cover is amazing! Watch for my announcement. Undercover Cat (book four) is being prepared for print. It will join books one through three as a print book.

I finished writing book seven yesterday. It will go to the proofreader in a few days.

Yes, moving right along.

In the meantime, we’re driving our own three cats crazy with household upgrades. They HATE the intrusion into their peaceful existence. And we detest upsetting them. They seem to recover nicely, though. At the end of the work day, when things quiet down, our fur kids venture out from under the bed and under the blankets in the bed and seem unaffected by the chaos that went on around here during the day.

If you haven’t read any of my Klepto Cat Mysteries, consider buying them for your Kindle. They’re only $2.99. Here’s the line-up, in case you want to read them in order. (While the characters’ lives and relationships progress, each book can stand alone.) Catnapped, Cat-Eye Witness, Sleight of Paw, Undercover Cat, The Colony Cat Caper. Coming soon, Celebrity Cat Caper.

These stories revolve around Rags, a confident cat with a most unusual habit. He’s a kleptomaniac. And the things he “takes” sometimes lead to solving a mystery. His caretakers are Savannah and Michael Ivey, veterinarians. Savannah’s Aunt Margaret plays a major role in the stories and new, interesting characters are added in each book. Most readers love Charlotte, a young friend of Savannah’s (and Rags). Charlotte has Downs syndrome and a strong affection for cats. Detective Craig Sledge is introduced in the 2nd book—Cat-Eye Witness—and has become a strong character in all subsequent books.

New Klepto Cat Mystery on the Horizon

It may seem as though I’m missing in action. Actually, I’ve been busy preparing more Klepto Cat Mysteries for your reading enjoyment. Celebrity Cat Caper will be on Kindle soon. Watch for it within the next few days. I love the cover—elegant, mysterious.

In Celebrity Cat Caper, we find Rags, the Klepto Cat, taking the spotlight in a documentary. Savannah and Michael Ivey, Rags’s guardians and local veterinarians, offer strangers shelter in a rainstorm, unaware that one of them has a sinister past. Rags helps uncover a mystery that has baffled locals for years.

I’m also writing the next in the series. I won’t share my working title because that might change. But I can tell you there’s LOTS of horse energy in this story. One of Rags’s (the Klepto Cat) best friends is a horse named Peaches. The mare leads Savannah, Michael and some of their friends on quite an adventure.

Read all five Klepto Cat Mysteries on Kindle. Catnapped, Cat-Eye Witness, and Sleight of Paw are also in print. http://amzn.to/1kAI8I2

More Fun Than a Basket of Kittens

lily-001Well, the host of my blog tour stopover for today seems to have disappeared—she has not posted to her blog site since early this month. So we’re on our own today. One thing she wanted me to do is to share a recipe, so that’s what I’m going to do today. Let me know if you like it.

Gourmet Grilled Cheese Sandwich

By Patricia Fry

(This recipe appears in the third Klepto Cat Mystery, Sleight of Paw. It’s a quick and easy gourmet meal for a busy day or to share with company.)

This recipe makes two generous servings—one sandwich each.

Four slices of Texas bread or thick-sliced bakery or homemade fresh white bread

Four slices pepper-jack cheese

Butter or margarine

Filling

3 roma tomatoes, sliced

1 lime

1/3 bunch cilantro, chopped

3 green onions or half small red or sweet onion chopped

Salt and pepper

Early in the day oven roast the tomatoes in olive oil and a little salt and pepper. (350 for 8-15 minutes depending on how thick the slices are.) When cool, chop the tomatoes and mix with lime zest from one lime, a little lime juice, the cilantro, and onions. Refrigerate until ready to use. At meal time, spread butter or margarine on one side of the bread slices and place two of them on a griddle or in a heavy skillet, buttered side down over medium heat. Add one slice of cheese (more if you like a cheesier sandwich). Spread half of the filling over the cheese. Top with a second slice of cheese and the second slice of bread. When the bread is browned and the cheese is starting to melt, turn the sandwiches to brown the other side.

Enjoy

Chill today with one of these fab sandwiches, and get ready for more Klepto Cat fun tomorrow, when one of Rags’s friends, Dolly (a tabby kitten), tells all at Melissa’s Mochas, Mysteries and Meows. http://www.mochasmysteriesmeows.com. AND we’re giving away Kindle and print copies of some of the Klepto Cat Mysteries.

Because we missed out on a tour stopover today, I’d like to offer those of you visiting this blog site a chance for a free book. Be one of the first three people to respond to one of the questions below and win your choice of one Klepto Cat Mystery for your Kindle. Your choices are Catnapped, Cat-Eye Witness, Sleight of Paw, Undercover Cat, or The Colony Cat Caper.

Question: In the Klepto Cat Mystery series, what is the main cat character’s name?

Klepto Cat Mystery Series Blog Tour

Yes, I’m taking the cats on another blog tour. I hope you will join us. FYI, there are now 5 in the Klepto Cat Mystery series. These books are considered “revved up cozy mysteries.” Or”cozy mysteries on steroids.” If you aren’t familiar with these books, here’s an opportunity to learn more about the stories, the characters and about me.

Here’s my blog tour schedule for July 21 through July 28.

Brenda Castro at WV Stitcher is devoting every Monday this month to the Klepto Cat Mystery series. She posted her original reviews for Catnapped, Cat-Eye Witness and Sleight of Paw July 7. This week, she is featuring Undercover Cat. Read her review here: http://www.kittycrochettwo.blogspot.com. Monday, July 21, Brenda reviews my latest Klepto Cat Mystery, The Colony Cat Caper

July 22, Laura Thomas will post a review for The Colony Cat Caper at her site, FU Only Knew. And she’ll post my guest blog focused on my writing path—what led up to my creating this successful cozy mystery series. Be sure to visit Laura’s site next Tuesday. http://www.fuonlyknew.com After having established a forty-year career writing nonfiction, why did I decide to try my hand at writing a novel? It’s a rather interesting story. You don’t want to miss it.

Wednesday, July 23, I’ll be sharing a recipe with Anna and her blog visitors at http://www.cozymysterybookreviews.net. She’ll also post her review of The Colony Cat Caper.

Portrait of a Cat

Portrait of a Cat

July 24, one of my cat characters, Dolly, a formerly feral kitten will be guest blogger. You don’t not want to miss this. Be sure to check in at http://www.mochasmysteriesmeows.com

July 25, Michele at Miki’s Hope will post her review of Sleight of Paw, the third in the series. http://www.mikishope.com I think I’ll provide something special for you at my this blog that day, as well. My theme is a surprise, even to me. Anyone have any ideas? Maybe Rags, the kleptomaniac cat, will join us and give us some hints about the next book in the Klepto Cat Mystery series.

Monday, July 28, I will be guest blogger at Brenda Castro’s site. http://www.kittycrochettwo.blogspot.com I’ll giving some never-before-divulged insight as to why I write what I write and how I come up with some of the Klepto Cat Mystery stories and cat personalities I feature.

Whew, it will be a full week, and a fun one. I hope you will make a note on your calendar to join me and my interesting cats for the journey.

What is Your Cat’s Personality Type?

img_0201It takes someone who has been around cats for a while to realize that a cat is not a cat is not a cat. Not only do they come in different sizes and shapes, but they have very different personalities. There are affectionate cats and those that are aloof; vocal cats, scaredy cats, active and lazy cats. There are cats with a sense of humor and those that are kind of grumpy. While some cats crave attention, others stay in the background. Some are gentle and others play rough. And some cats develop some rather interesting habits.

I wrote an article once on cat personalities for Cat Fancy Magazine. Here’s an outline of my findings for that article.

The Possessive Cat

Have you ever had a cat that seemed to dibs you? The possessive cat may spend a lot of time in your lap or at your feet. When another cat comes close, she bumps or swats him out of the way. This cat is the first to greet you when you return home and she probably sleeps with you at night.

This can be a most endearing cat—it’s always nice to feel loved. But, in a multi-cat household, it’s important that the other cats also receive the attention they require.

Our youngest, Lily, is my possessive cat. But Max, at sixteen, still wants his attention. While the two of them have established a workable schedule, there are still times when Lily attempts to assert her authority over the much larger, but meeker cat. Thus Lily gets me most of the time. But Max demands a few minutes of lap time first thing in the morning while I’m at my computer and for an hour or so each evening. During these times, Lily sits at my feet overseeing the situation and waiting her turn.

The Manipulator

The manipulator is the cat who has learned how to get what he wants. He might knock things over on your dresser to get your attention when he’s ready for breakfast or scratch on the sofa to cause a reaction. This might not be manipulation in the sense that people use it, but a learned behavior through conditioning, perhaps.

When Max was a kitten, he’d constantly push his toys under the refrigerator. He’d wait there until I walked into the room, then he’d let me know that he lost a toy under there, again. It seemed as though he was doing this on purpose. He so enjoyed “helping” me probe for the missing mouse, ball, or feather. As soon as the item was recovered, he’d bat it under there again. And again he’d dance around my feet as if to persuade me to get down on the floor and retrieve his toy once more. Of course, I did. I called Max “the manipulator.”

The Noncommittal Kitty

This cat keeps its people at arm’s length. He expresses and receives attention only on his own terms. He might roll over in front of you and look up endearingly, but when you reach down to pet him, he scurries away. Or she may walk over to you on the couch, but panic if you attempt to pick her up.

The Bad Boy/Bad Girl Cat

When a bad boy (or girl) kitty weaves his way into your heart; your life will never be the same again. If you decide to keep this cat, you’ll have to learn to live with upset trash baskets and spilled houseplant dirt. You may never be able to display a bouquet of flowers safely in your home again. And that comment you’ve made in the past about “never keeping a cat who…” will go out the window.

The cat I mentioned as the manipulator—Max—is now sixteen. He has a problem with inappropriate urination and he’s been like that all of his life. I should have got a clue when, as a four-week-old kitten he pooped in his food dish. Now we consider Max our bad boy cat and I use a whole lot of Nature’s Miracle.

The Wired Cat

Do you know a cat that’s excitable and rather unpredictable? He may be a wired cat. According to cat behaviorists, there are a lot of them and they’re the ones that get into trouble with aggressive behavior.

This cat often jumps out at you from behind the sofa when you’re walking by and digs in with teeth and claws. We actually have one living next door. Just when I think the yellow tabby is going to welcome my petting, he grabs my arm with claws out, bites me and dashes off.

Identifying your cat’s personality might be is easy. Living with it can take patience and creativity. The bottom line seems to be that cats come with or develop some interesting behaviors and, if we commit to the cat, we will must also adapt to the behavior.

Tell us about some of your unusual cat personalities.

And to experience a wide array of cat personalities, behavior, and habits, be sure to read all five of the Klepto Cat Mysteries. Available at Amazon.com in Kindle. The first three are also in print.

They are Catnapped, Cat-Eye Witness, Sleight of Paw, Undercover Cat, and The Colony Cat Caper.

Let the Cat Help Teach Your Kids Responsibility

jaydenalyzaychristmas2013-023I’ve heard parents say they were getting a kitten or a horse in order to teach their children responsibility. Sadly, some of them decide that the best way to teach them is to turn the child loose with the animal. WRONG! I’ve written several articles on this concept. Today I want to share my tips for teaching kids responsibility through cat ownership

Toddler (ages 3-4)

(Together with the parents)

  • Determine where the cat will eat and sleep.
  • Select cat food and litter.
  • Participate in locating or purchasing bed, food/water bowls and litter box.
  • Minimally participate in feeding the cat. (A young child can help a parent pour kibbles and water into the bowl, but they cannot be responsible for remembering to feed or for keeping the water bowl full and clean.)
  • Help choose appropriate toys for the cat or kitten.
  • Play with the cat or kitten with supervision. (Have a few teasers around for playtime. A teaser is a wand with a feather or other material dangling from it. Teach the child to use the wand instead of his hand at playtime.)
  • Coach the child in how to pet, hold, and, where appropriate, pick up the kitten or cat.

Ages 5 through 7

(With parents’ assistance)

All of the tasks above, plus:

  • Decide if this will be an indoor or outdoor cat. (Understand and discuss the pros and cons of each choice.)
  • Make the house safe for the kitten or cat. (For a kitten, keep toilet seats down, place blind cords out of reach, keep needlework supplies picked up, remove toxic plants, secure household cleaners, etc.)
  • Choose or build a cat tree (scratching post).
  • Determine what sort of grooming equipment you need for this particular cat and participate in making the selections.
  • Help with light grooming.
  • Feed and water the cat under parental supervision. (While these children can manage these tasks, it is up to the parent to make sure it gets done.)

Ages 8 and up

(With parents’ guidance and supervision)

In addition to the tasks above:

  • Take responsibility for feeding and watering the cat daily.
  • Clean the litter box every day and ALWAYS wash hands with soap and water afterward.marmaladeremodel-006
  • Make sure that an inside cat doesn’t get out.
  • Clip coupons for cat supplies (food, automatic watering device, toys, litter, etc.).
  • Make sure the cat gets plenty of exercise.
  • Research how to train the cat to use the scratching post instead of the furniture.

The next time you walk into the kitchen to fill the cats’ bowl with kibbles, stop. Round up the kids and turn feeding time into a family affair. Your feline princess or prince can become an even more valuable family member by helping you to raise more responsible children.

Unique Volunteer Opportunities for Shelter Pets

lily-007There are a lot of people volunteering on behalf of animals and some of them are more creative than others. Most, for example, donate funds or give some of their time caring for and/or socializing cats and dogs at shelters and rescue facilities. Others come up with some creative ways to help the unwanted cat and dog population. Here are some that I know of. Maybe you can add to this inspiring list:

1: One woman I know video tapes cats and dogs in a shelter to be played, not only at the shelter’s website, but in the front windows of several popular stores downtown. There’s nothing like seeing an animal’s personality shining through in a video to endure the public to him or her.

2: A professional photographer I know has teamed up with a pet groomer to make the cat or dog look their best for their portraits. Once she took the most charming portraits of some of the animals with elderly people and children and hung them around town to get exposure for the shelter pets.

3: Another woman makes little quilts for shelter cats and dogs.

4: Some people have extraordinary organization and event-planning skills and they jump in to help shelter animals by creating fund-raisers.

5: Many writers and authors help animals on a large scale by educating the public through articles and stories for readers of all ages. Even fiction can contain important messages related to animals rescue and care.

Do you know someone who is providing a unique service for shelter animals? I’d love to mention it to my readers. Leave a comment here or at my facebook page: www.facebook.com/kleptocatmysteries or email me: PLFry620@yahoo.com

Lazy Day for Lily

Lazy Day for Lily

Have you read any of my Klepto Cat Mysteries, yet? There are now 5 of them. I’d love to gift a copy to one of my blog readers—and I think I’ll just do that.

It’s my birthday week. I started this series during my birthday week in 2012—two years ago. As a gift to myself, I decided to try writing fiction. What fun!!! I’m really enjoying the process and it appears that readers are enjoying them, too, as they’ve purchased one or two thousand Kindle and print copies of the series each month. That’s right—thousands! And we have some great reviews—nearly 150 to date.

Have you read Catnapped, Cat-Eye Witness, Sleight of Paw, Undercover Cat or the latest, The Colony Cat Caper, yet? They’re all available for Kindle at Amazon.com and the first 3 are also now in print. Do you like light mysteries, a little romance, and cats? You might just enjoy the Klepto Cat Mystery series.

As a birthday gift to me this year, I’ll give one copy each of the book of your choice in either print (in the US only) or Kindle to the first two readers who can tell me the name of the main cat character.

Either leave a comment here or email me at PLFry620@yahoo.com
