Developing Kitty Purrsonalities

Lily Loves Water

Lily Loves Water

I’m writing again—yes, another Klepto Cat Mystery. This will be number 4. I have two published as Kindle books—Catnapped and Cat-Eye Witness. The third in the series is Sleight of Paw and it’s ready to go as soon as my cover artist finalizes the charming cover.

More news: I’m preparing Catnapped for print! We’re in wait mode on that one, too—waiting for the artist to make some adjustments to the original cover.

In the meantime, I’m writing. I have 80 pages of story so far. Yesterday morning I was developing a new cat character. Now that’s an interesting process.

These stories are driven by people characters, of course—no talking cats in the Klepto Cat Mysteries. I find it fairly easy to get into the heads of my human characters. And I love developing kitty personalities. But it’s a little more complicated for me. Yesterday, for example, I gave life to a sweet little tabby who had no place to go and no one to love him. His life, of course, changes for the better when a character who had reason to dislike cats opens his heart to this one.

I created this kitty from my impressions of Lily. You see her photographs here at this blog quite often. But the little guy also has bits and pieces of personality I’ve observed and experienced in some of my other cats over the years.

The kitten in my story has two names—two different people came to his rescue at two different times and now they are conflicted about his name—Tucker or Maxie. Only that will change today as I rewrite this kitten’s gender. I’ve decided that she will be a female—so I’ll have to conjure up new names for her.

Why did I make this decision? I have one strong male in the stories—Rags, the kleptomaniac cat who has a paw in solving the crimes the people are faced with. There is also Walter, an all black male. We have Layla, a sweet faux Persian girl featured quite often in Catnapped—the first in the series. I figured it’s time for another soft girl kitty purrsonality. But don’t worry, when she heals from her respiratory illness, she will show her true silly, funny, entertaining qualities.

Let me know if you’d like to be personally notified when Catnapped is in print, when Sleight of Paw is available on Kindle and when the 4th, as yet untitled book in the series is ready. PLFry620@yahoo.com

What’s Up With the Klepto Cat?

Lots happening here in the Klepto Cat Mystery workshop.

  • I finished Klepto Cat Mystery number 3, Sleight of Paw—finally. I didn’t think I would ever stop editing.
  • The cover is in the works. I think the artist and I have agreed on the final details. As soon as she applies those details and my techie person returns from vacation, Sleight of Paw—the most exciting of the books so far—will be committed to the Kindle Direct Publishing program. I’ll definitely keep you posted.

  • I have finalized the title for the Klepto Cat Mystery number 4. It’s only just outlined, but I wanted to start promoting it and needed a title. I decided on Paws for the Cause.
  • More exciting news. I’ve established a Create Space account and we’re in process of committing the first book in the Klepto Cat series, Catnapped, to print. I have a long list of people who want me to contact them once I have print copies. Let me know if you want to be among them. PLFry620@yahoo.com

Holiday Kitty Photos

The boys checking out a bunny--on Christmas

The boys checking out a bunny--on Christmas

Choosing photos for this blog can be time-consuming. Often, when I choose just the right shot to accompany a post, I get down to the wire and discover that the file is too big to fit. Now, I love photography. I can take some interesting photos. But I am lacking when it comes to manipulating the pictures I take. Someone who knows what they’re doing might know to push a certain button or make a certain adjustment so that the photo file fits. Me? I just move on to another picture that might or might not work.

Today, I set out to use holiday photos of cats. But I got just a little bit side-tracked. Hope you enjoy the shots I chose.

In the meantime, if you’re still searching for a gift for someone who loves his/her Kindle and who happens to like light mysteries and cats. Please consider gifting them copies of my first two novels from my Klepto Cat Mystery series—Catnapped and Cat-Eye Witness. They’re at Amazon.com.

Another idea is to purchase an Amazon gift card for the Kindle readers on your list and give them this link: http://www.matilijapress.com/Klepto-Cat-Mysteries/index.html They can order both books from the links they’ll see there.

Star Cat

Smokey

Smokey

I visited Smokey yesterday and this is how he greeted me. As Margaret, in my Klepto Cat Mystery stories says, when she sees the star cat, Rags, sprawled out like this, “You look like some kind of hood ornament.”

Smokey is my mother’s cat. I used him to develop Rags because I wanted him to be big, confident, funny and active like Smokey is. Rags is also a kleptomaniac.

There are some comical scenes around Rags “habit” in these books. But the most alluring aspect of his is his uncanny ability to uncover, discover and recover clues in the mysteries presented within these pages.

Rags is an ordinary cat living amidst an array of ordinary people living interesting lives. If you haven’t read any of the books in this series, I’d like to invite you to do so. They are $2.99 each and are formatted for Kindle only at http://www.amazon.com.

The titles are “Catnapped” and “Cat-Eye Witness.”

Holidays With Cats

Lily

Lily

Holiday time can be exciting in a household with cats. We put our Christmas tree up a couple of nights ago. Lily thinks we brought it in expressly for her playtime pleasure. Sophie views it as another great hideout. Max is in denial that it even exists. The intrusion of a tree laden with colorful doodads that jangle and twinkle is way too much for him to deal with.

This is also a time to be super careful. We can’t use raffia, curly ribbon and of course, tinsel in Sophie’s world. She’ll eat it. She already survived swallowing a piece of ribbon from our granddaughter’s pony tail once. We (and she) were lucky. It went clear through her before we knew she’d ingested it.

I still don’t know whether poinsettias are poisonous to cats. Some say yes, some say no. So all poinsettia plants that come around this house, must be displayed outside. I have one fake poinsettia I use inside.

We don’t use angle hair to decorate with. We now set up an artificial tree, so there’s no worry about using preservative chemicals in the tree water.

We are mindful of gift bags and plastic bags with handles. Some years ago, Winfield kitty got snoopy and ended up with his head caught in the handle of a gift bag. We found out about it when we observed the white kitten tearing through the living room closely followed by a gift bag. We caught up with Winfield and his attacker in the bedroom under the bed and released the kitten from the blue monster bag.

I still haven’t figured out how to keep the cats from opening their own gifts. If catnip is involved, they sniff it out and open it up before Christmas morning. At least this keeps them away from the other gifts.

We’ve never had cats knock over a tree. We’ve been lucky there. However, just last night, Lily was examining a very interesting ornament and somehow got tangled in the string of lights. Suddenly, we saw the tree spinning around in the stand. No worries. The tree and the kitty came out okay.

If someone on your holiday list enjoys reading mysteries involving cats on their Kindles, be sure to gift them copies of Catnapped and Cat-Eye Witness (author, Patricia Fry). They are $2.99 each at Amazon—for Kindle only.

Handling Kitty Health Challenges in a Multi-Cat Household

Lily

Lily

Things are peaceful in kittyland here at the Fry household. I’ve been under the weather this week and the cats have taken advantage of the opportunity to snuggle with me in the cozy blankie on the couch. Sometimes they fight over who gets to cuddle with Mommy, other times they all surround me—pin me down, make me too hot…

I’ve made a few changes in their routine. Lily, at only 4 years, is losing kidney function. She’s in the beginning stages of kidney failure. So she’s on a special kidney support diet. Max, 15, is experiencing the same condition. Only for him, it’s age-appropriate. Sophie (9) is healthy and should not have the special food prescribed for Lily and Max. So feeding the cats has become an interestingly creative endeavor.

Sophie won’t eat if anyone’s watching her. We assume this is a habit she brought with her from life on the streets when she was young. Max (also formerly feral) eats canned food only when he thinks he’s stealing it from one of the girls. Lily has no qualms about eating her food and their food. While Sophie and Max engage in their quirky dining habits, she’ll clean their plates for them, if I don’t keep an eye on her.

When we learned of Lily’s condition, we started her on the canned kidney support food. We kept kibbles in the mix because we can’t get Max to eat enough of the canned food. It is the prescription kibbles diet for cats with kidney problems. I did research and discovered some other things I thought might help Lily. My vet agreed to pumpkin for her digestion, probiotics and fish oil supplements. I also consulted a holistic vet who suggested some things we should add to her diet. At first, Lily didn’t seem to notice we were doctoring her food with supplements. She ate what we put in front of her. After a while, she began to protest. She’d eat a few bites and then head out to find where the others were eating and barge in on their meals.

It became a challenge to get everyone fed three times a day. When I realized that Lily was leaving more of her food than she was eating, I decided to try something else. It is important that she eats. It is important that she eats the prescription cat food. So I decided to stop the supplements, which she was objecting to and she is getting only the prescription food now.

She seems to be thriving. We’re keeping a close eye on her, of course, but it appears that she is eating better, playing more and the twitching, which is what led to us to have a blood panel on her, which is how we discovered she is in kidney failure, finally seems to be minimized.

We will keep you posted. It appears that Lily’s life will be shortened because of this disease, but we will continue to do whatever it takes to keep her happy and healthy. She is a dear creature. Such a comfort and a delight.
