Feline Fun Friday

We talked about books on Wednesday. Today I’d like to tell you about a few sites I found for those of you who adore cats and cat stories and information. Here, you’ll find a list of names for your new kitten—all of them representative of flowers. How fun. Have you ever had a flower-name for a cat? I had Lily, which is one of the top names for cats. How many cats named Lily have you known? There’s Petunia—I like that one. Oh, I also named a cat Pansy, once because as a kitten her little face looked like a pansy. There’s Rose—I named a cat Rosie. What about Daffy (for daffodil), or Violet…There are hundreds of sweet possibilities. And you’ll find many of them at this site.

You’ll also learn such things as, what’s the difference between a feral cat and a stray cat, do cats get jealous, smart things cats do, where should you put the litter box… Enjoy: https://www.dailypaws.com/

And you must visit https://www.meowlove.com Oh, the touching stories here. There’s enough meow love at this site to make your day and many days to come. They include a cat climbing a fire escape to find a home, cats that went from feral to snuggly and friendly in a day, cats bonding with each other under unusual circumstances. There’s a lot of meow-love out there and you’ll find a big helping of it at this site.

Paws Up for Wednesday – What’s New in Cat Books?

I belong to the Cat Writers Association and know a lot of other authors with cat books—fiction, fantasy, nonfiction, how to, children’s books—you name it. We have 250 members, and I don’t know how many books between us—remember I have 75 cozy mysteries with cats. There are several others who write series as well as behaviorists, cat sitters, veterinarians, etc. in the organization who write nonfiction books on a wide variety of topics. Here’s a link to the book list. Use the tiny arrow on the right to scroll down.

I also found this list of new books you might find interesting, they include cozies, childrens, and more. Here are a few titles that sound interesting, “The Essential Survival Guide for Cat Owners,” and “Feline Philosophy.” That sounds like a must read in my world.

Meowy Monday – Does Your Cat Talk Back?

I read once that cats can make something like 33 different sounds. If you’ve had several cats over time you know that some are more vocal than others and some, like our Olivia, can sure come up with a lot of different pitches and tones.

Olivia is actually a quiet cat unless she has something to say, like, “It’s three o’clock in the afternoon, it’s time for everyone to convene in the living room.” She’ll continue bugging us with her chatter until everyone is where she thinks they should be. Then she’ll take a nap. Well, being the supervisor of her people is hard work.

She has a different tone to let us know she’s hungry. Sometimes she actually eats what we feed her. She uses her voice when she wants us to open a window for her so she can feel the air and watch the birds and the cats as well as the neighbors walking by. And sometimes she carries on verbally when she’s bored and she wants to engage in a game with us or just wants petting.

I enjoy my conversations with Olivia. She usually starts it. She’ll chirp what appears to be a greeting. I’ll respond, “I love you, too.” Then the conversations continue with her chirps and peeps and mews. If I respond, she’ll respond in kind. I notice that if I speak harshly to her, saying, “No, Olivia, now go away, I have to work.” I’ll get a sassy response. Yes, cats can be sassy.

Then there are the times when we argue. She says, “Come out of the office MEOW and pay attention to me.”

I say, “Get up here in my lap or on my desk and I’ll pet you while I work.” Then the argument begins.

You’ve probably heard at least some of your cat’s sounds—the chattering she does when she sees a bird out the window, the mew-mew sound she makes when she wants her kibbles bowl filled, the meeoooowww she emits when she wants what she wants—outside, petting, a treat, or something else. Cats can cry, sound mournful, complain, banter happily, murmur sweet things while being petted, and snarl, yell, screech, sass—maybe even swear. Some of my favorite sounds are Olivia’s chirps. They sound happy to me.

I saw an ap once that you could use to decipher your cat’s tones. They claimed that you could record the cat and the ap would tell you exactly what she’s saying. I have to wonder, do we really want to know what the cat’s actually telling us?

Feline Fun Friday – Olivia: Fact or Fiction

Olivia turns three years old this week. She was a COVID baby, coming to us in 2020 as a kitten after being found living under a house, and after having to undergo weeks of ringworm treatment—which means frequent baths. She was not the easiest kitten I’ve had as far as socializing her, but she came around big-time. We’re extremely pleased with her progress. She’s even learning to trust strange sounds and strangers just a little. It’s interesting to watch her grow–she started out being terrified of the trash trucks rumbling down the street on Mondays. Now They fascinate her–she rushes to the window to watch them. I’ve watched her work through other fears all by herself.

You all know that I’ve created a series featuring Olivia. She has such a big purr-sonality that I couldn’t resist exploiting it and expanding on it. It’s uncanny how much she influences the stories in my Calico Cat Mysteries.

People wonder how closely I pattern the Olivia character after the real Olivia. Well, it’s an interesting dance between the Olivia we adore and the Olivia I’ve created. I’ve taken many of Olivia’s habits and activities/action and quirks and overall personality and incorporated them into the fiction Olivia. For example, Olivia really does screech like a banshee and leap as high as she can up against the walls. She loves a lap snuggle. She is extremely curious. She has ways of letting us know what she wants and when. She insists, for example, that the two of us stop what we’re doing and convene in the living room around three every afternoon with her. She insists on family time.

She is mostly quiet, but when she has something on her mind she can be very vocal—usually we can figure out what she wants—a window open so she can feel the air and hear the birds, me out of my office or back in the house. If I’m out in the yard she follows me from window to window, meowing. She has a vocabulary which I haven’t figured out yet—but she definitely uses different sounds in different situations.

She lets us know loud and clear when it’s time to play a game she invented where she goes into a tent-toy and we toss paper wads and small toys on top of it for her to bat off or jump out and grab. She loves that game. She likes to interact with us.

Olivia is an only cat like the Olivia in my stories, but she is fascinated by other cats in the yard and follows them from window to window. Like the fiction Olivia, she is a poor eater—but maintains her weight. I weigh her often to make sure. But when she does want canned food she lets me know. How I hate the waste of canned cat food around here. She’ll often ask for it and not eat it.

The real Olivia does not like to ride in cars. I’ve never tried putting a harness and leash on her. Knowing her, I’m pretty sure that would not go well. So she is an indoor cat only.

Like the fiction Olivia, she is spunky, comical, smart as a whip, curious as all get out, and a wonderful companion.

The next time you read one of Olivia’s stories now you’ll know where some of my ideas come from. It might be something I’ve observed Olivia doing, her CATtitude about something, or simply something I imagine her doing that inspires a story theme or simply one scene in a story.

All of the calico cat stories are Olivia approved. She spends a lot of time in my office looking over my shoulder and vocalizing her opinion–oh yes, and curled up in my lap. I often create at the computer with the lovely sound of purring in the background.

Paws Up for Wednesday – The Rare Male Calico

Yes, there is such an animal and boy, are they cute. A friend sent me this link to a news report about a male calico. This adorable calico was recently turned over to a cat rescue facility in Colorado along with his two calico sisters.

How rare is the male calico? I’ve never seen one, have you? They say just one out of 3,000 calicos are male. And did you know that they call a male calico a unicorn cat. Thus, this little calico (you must go to the site and see his picture—adorable!!!) is temporarily named Unicorn.

Enjoy!

Sorry I couldn’t copy the pix of the male calico for you. I’m using one of Olivia’s baby pictures here.

Feline Fun Friday – Two More Cat Holidays

Today is National Hairball Awareness Day. Anyone who has lived with cats for any length of time is aware of the arrrff of an occasional hairball—usually on the carpet or a favorite piece of furniture.

To see a cat upchuck one of those ugly masses is a bit disturbing. You wonder if the cat has swallowed a tennis ball, the way she gags and convulses to get the thing out. The new and totally unaware cat owner might think the cat has vomited an entire kitten. How could that happen? Better call the Guinness World Book of Records.

Actually hairballs are common, if not a natural occurrence among cats. Cats do a lot of grooming, taking a lot of fur into their stomach and that which isn’t deposited into the litter box comes out the other end in what appears to be a huge eruption. If you fear for your cat at these times and gag at the thought of having to pick up one of those things and disposing of it, there’s hope. Here’s what to do:

Groom your cat regularly—help him remove that loose fur before he swallows it.

I just learned that stress is one reason for hairballs. Now that could be because a cat sheds more when stressed. Or maybe stress helps to activate the mechanism that catapults the fur ball out of his system. So providing a stress-free environment for your cat might help.

There are also petroleum-based treats that help the cat pass the hairball. I used to give my Himalayan cat a taste of one every day or so. She loved it, and she seemed to arf up fewer of those ugly hairballs.

On another note—Sunday is National Tabby Day. If you’ve ever loved a tabby—whether ticked, patched, striped, classic or mackerel, this is a good day to remember them and to celebrate those that you still adore. Our tabby, Lily, was one of our most precious cats. I will fondly remember her on Sunday as I do every single day.

I’m fortunate in that one of my daughters had a picture book of Lily made for me after we lost her. I love looking through that sweet gift and remembering the eleven years of wonderful moments with Lily.

Paws Up for Wednesday – National Free Spay a Feral Cat Day

Tomorrow is National Free Spay a Feral Cat Day. And it’s an important day. Each year since this day was established, more and more veterinarians worldwide have become involved. We should thank them for their service.

So what’s the big deal? We all love kittens. Is there anything more adorable???? But we also want all cats and kittens to thrive in the world they’re born into. Here’s an eye opener: According to statistics, one unspayed female cat can be responsible for 420,000 kittens over a period of 10 years.

When you consider that seventy percent of households in the US have cats—which is approx 90 million households—and that there are estimated to be as many as 100 million stray cats/homeless cats in this country alone, you can see that we have a huge problem—that we’re creating a huge problem for the cat population.

Certainly, there are many agencies and individuals working hard to help manage the cat population, but as you can see by the statistics, we still have a long way to go.

If you know of one or more cats in your neighborhood that aren’t being cared for and that are not spayed-neutered—maybe it’s time to become pro-active. Take advantage of FREE Spay Day, unite as a neighborhood and connect with an agency to trap these cats and have them neutered/spayed.

Meowy Monday – Amazing Facts About a Cat’s Purr

Who doesn’t adore spending time with a purring cat? It’s relaxing, but did you know that the purring sound that soothes a cat is thought to also soothe and even heal humans. Don’t you love the fact that scientists are finally studying cats at such length to learn things like this?

We know that a mother cat purrs to calm her kittens and that a cat will purr when she’s relaxed and content, but also when she’s hurting and in distress. Here’s a real newsflash: The cats purr can also help you heal from injuries, surgery, and even broken bones. According to experts, a cat’s purr can aid in the process of bone regeneration. Wow! That’s worth paying attention to.

I also found a promising and hopeful bit of information claiming that if you suffer from migraines, lying close to a purring cat may offer relief.

Oh yes, and it is also believed that people with cats are less likely to die of a heart attack. Interesting stuff, right? Here’s a link you might enjoy reading. There are countless more of them for those of you who are fascinated by this concept.
