Wild (and sometimes crazy) Wednesday – Strange Behaviors in Cats Explained

LilyOwlIMG_2288I think we’ve all watched our cats engage in some sort of odd behavior and asked “Why do they do that?”

Have you ever wondered why cats chatter when they see a bird outside the window? Why do they give us head butts? What makes some cats chew plastic? Why do they bring us presents (their toys, dead rodents, etc.)? Why do they knead, stare, cry at night? Here’s a site that will shed some light on these and other strange behaviors you might observe in your cat. http://www.vetstreet.com/our-pet-experts/10-strange-cat-behaviors-explained

A friend-blog follower sent me this—the most elaborate cardboard house I’ve ever seen. He made it for his cat. Don’t miss it. But don’t let your cat see it, he’ll surely put this on his Christmas list. And you thought putting that bicycle you bought your child was difficult. http://algo.fyi/6ps45q

Newsday Tuesday – Are You Sure You’re a Cat Person? Take the Quiz!!!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Yesterday we touched on cat people versus non-cat people. Here’s a quiz you can take to find out if you actually are a cat person. It’s kind of fun. It takes a few minutes, but it’s rather interesting. I learned that I am a friend to all furries. Yup. That’s quite true. That doesn’t mean I want to bring dogs, horses, sheep, raccoons, parakeets into my home, but I certainly like these and many other critters—lions, bears, Oh my! And I have opened my home and barn to dogs, horses, raccoons, sheep, parakeets, and, of course, quite a few cats and kittens over the years.

Take the quiz here: http://www.mydailymoment.com/app/quiz/userquiz/takequiz/291

Do you have a favorite cat? One thing I notice about myself is that my favorite cat is the one I’m currently caring for. Sure, I miss the qualities and companionship of several of my former cats. But Lily and Sophie are my current favorites.

I’m also partial to Rags, the star of the Klepto Cat Mysteries. He is one unique, cool cat.

I’ve given Rags some feline friends throughout the stories. He and a tabby named Dolly are great friends. They’ve had some amazing CATventures together. Rags loved palling around with an exceptional Siamese named Coco in a couple of the stories. He and a black-and-white boy named Jack play together on occasion. And he has friends from other species, too—like Peaches, the horse and a couple of dog he’s helped out when they needed a friendly paw.

If you like a little fur with your mysteries, you might enjoy reading the Klepto Cat Mystery series. Autographed copies available here: http://www.matilijapress.com/Klepto-Cat-Mysteries

Mindful Monday – Cat People Versus Non-Cat People

Alyzay and LilyIf you subscribe to this blog, you would probably consider yourself a cat person—someone who adores (at at least really likes) cats. Some of you even prefer cats as pets over dogs or any other species of animal.

If you’re like me, most of your closest friends are also cat people and it’s hard for you to understand someone who can’t warm up to cats. It’s non-cat people who make comments that cause you to cringe, such as, “Can’t you keep your cats off the counter?” “What is it about a cat that you like, anyway?” “All your cat does is sleep.” “Cats freak me out.” Here’s a list of additional comments non-cat people might make. http://www.vetstreet.com/our-pet-experts/7-comments-that-make-cat-owners-cringe

What is the allure of the cat for you? Have you ever stopped to figure that out? For me, at least part of it is that beautiful coat they wear. I say that I love cats, but I will draw the line at the Sphinx, for example. Give me the fur. I used to say, “The more fur the better.” However, I’ve backed off the Persian kick a little. Persians are lovely, but gads can that long hair be a nuisance to manage and to clean up. There was a time when I considered giving up on the fluffy cats and going with a smoother-furred kitty, until I took care of a friend’s short-haired cats for a while. I found out that they shed just as vigorously as my longer-haired cats.

I don’t like to think that my love of the cat is only fur deep. But boy do I love petting and marmaladeremodel-006cuddling with a furry feline. I enjoy a cat’s antics—watching them play, react to each other, stare at you, use their charms to get what they want… But still, I prefer all of these charms in a furry little body.

I’ve met people who love their hairless kitties. The first one I ever saw belonged to my veterinarian. When he showed it to me, I asked, “What’s wrong with him?” I figured he was a patient who had gone through some awful trauma and lost all his fur.

I know people who prefer black cats. One friend appreciates those cats with a bit of a wild heritage (Savannah’s, for example). Grandma loved the Siamese—apple-heads if you please. I don’t remember seeing the slim version of Siamese in those days. And bless those cat people who will take in the cat just because she needs someone—regardless of her type, style, and length of her fur. And I think most of us have done that over the years.

Frivolous Friday – More Cat Safety Tips

CatinTreeThe holidays can be dangerous for cats with all of the unusual and interesting things coming out of the attic, garage, and basement and filling the house—things that sparkle and shimmer and crinkle.

I know we’ve touched on this before, but it’s important enough to repeat. Here’s a site I found giving tips for keeping your cat off the Christmas tree. Yes, cats will attack, climb, and even topple a Christmas tree. (Can you see the white cat in the middle of this Christmas tree? I’ve never had a cat do anything more than knock off ornaments or disturb the packages underneath. But if you have a cat who is overly fascinated with your Christmas tree, here’s help: http://www.cathealth.com/how-and-why/how-to-keep-your-cat-off-the-christmas-tree

We have had a near serious problem with a cat eating ribbon and metallic bows. This can be a real danger for cats. Here’s a site that explains why string, ribbon and yarn can be a serious danger to your cat. http://www.cathealth.com/safety/the-dangers-of-strings-ribbons-and-yarn-for-cats

Thoughts for Thursday – Do Cats Have Feelings?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Before I get into today’s topic, I want to share a bit of information for those living in and around the Los Angeles area. A friend of mine became inundated with feral cats and decided she needed to do something to stop the influx of new kitty families. She contacted FixNation at http://fixnation.org and they loaned her the traps and arranged for the spay/neuter surgeries of eleven feral cats for free. I imagine they would accept donations.
Today, I want to touch on the emotions of a cat and our devotion or lack of for cats. There are cat people and those who can’t stand the beasts. There are animal people who can relate to cats, dogs, lions, horses at a level that can’t easily be explained. And there are others who don’t give animals a second thought except to avoid them or perhaps use them or even abuse them.

Today’s question is, do cats (and other animals) have feelings? According to Rene KittenFullSizeRenderDescartes (17th-century French philosopher), “Animals eat without pleasure, cry without pain, grow without knowing it, they desire nothing, fear nothing, know nothing.” Now he doesn’t sound like someone who ever spent a second in the company of any sort of animal. Is observations are certainly of animals at a distance. He probably never had a cat curl up in his lap or look into his eyes or a dog express excitement at his presence.

In the next century, Voltaire wrote “You discover in an animal all the same organs and feelings as in yourself.” And by 1859, Charles Darwin had advanced this concept, but still many believed and still believe the animal is inferior because they do not have a voice.

Virginia Morell is a science writer and the author of Animal Wise: How We Know Animals Think and Feel. She says “Our language skill is supposedly exceptional. But is it? Or is it just that because we do it so well, we overlook or miss altogether the language-like skills of other creatures?”

IMG_1682Something to think about isn’t it? I remember my children, when they were small, would marvel at how they perceived my understanding of our cat’s chatter. Because I seemed to know when the cat wanted in or out, when she wanted to eat, when she wanted me to dig a ball out from under the couch for her, the girls believed I had some amazing ability to understand the cat’s particular meow—as if it were a language.

The girls know now that, indeed, I was tapping into the cat’s language—her body language. Don’t you do that with your cat? Can’t you tell when she wants to be petted, would rather be left alone, is ill, frightened, hungry, ready to play, ready to cuddle, and so forth? And I notice that each cat develops her own body language or way of communicating her needs or desires. Do our cats learn this from us or do they come to us with their language in place and teach us to understand them?

Do cats have feelings? How can anyone look into the eyes of a cat and deny that they do?

Wild (and Sometimes Crazy) Wednesday – Cats in Trouble

Neighborhood Garden Cat

Neighborhood Garden Cat

Just this week I saw a piece on TV showing a beautiful cat in Russia frozen solid in ice. She had evidently stopped for a little too long—maybe she was ill—and she became frozen to the ground and could not move. Thankfully she was discovered in time. After pouring warm water around her, they were able to lift her from her potential icy grave. And the young cat evidently suffered no injuries.

This happened to a kitten in Ohio a few years ago. A motorist saw a block of ice alongside the road. When he saw that ice move, he stopped to check it out and found a near frozen kitten.

Last year in Massachusetts, a fluffy frozen feral cat was saved from certain death by local firemen who walked on ice to reach her.

Winter weather can bring serious dangers for cats, but so can summer weather. Cats can get overheated and dehydrated. White cats, or those with white ears, can be seriously sunburned.

The fact is, cats (and virtually all animals) should be protected from the same elements that pose a danger to humans—extreme heat, extreme cold, torrential rain and the potential results of these circumstances: heat stroke, hypothermia, drowning and so forth.

sophieshredderThis Cat’s in Trouble

Here’s another sort of cat in trouble. This is Sophie, our paper shredder. She loves tearing into a wad of paper. Fortunately, this is nothing important. But she has been known to shred faxes when they come in. In the evening, I toss wads of paper to Lily–she’s our athlete and loves to leap into the air after a paper ball. When Lily’s finished playing with it, Sophie shreds it. And when Sophie finishes making a mess, guess who picks up the little pieces–after taking a picture, of course.

Newsday Tuesday – Low-Cost Spay Neuter Clinics

meadowssept30-074Do you have a cat you can’t afford to have spayed or neutered? Does she need veterinary care? Maybe you know someone in your neighborhood who isn’t caring properly for their cats. Or you’re aware of a colony (gathering) of feral (wild-homeless) cats or even just one. There is help. In fact, when I conducted the research for this post, I was quite amazed at how much help there is out there. It appears that there’s no excuse for leaving even one cat behind, except for ignorance. And there’s a lot of help available for that problem, as well—if only we would take advantage of it or guide the uneducated cat owners toward it.

In Florida, for example, the Meow Mobile is been on duty with volunteers educating cat gorgebirdbathowners and offering low-cost spay/neuter services as well as veterinary care. Over the 21 years they’ve been in existence, the 2,500 volunteers have trapped, spayed/neutered over 51,000 cats and adopted out over 7,000. Check them out here: http://www.meowmobile.com

SOS (Shelter Outreach Services) of Ohio operates in the Columbus area. They, too, provide affordable veterinary care and spay/neuter services. http://www.sosohio.org

In California, you can contact Love That Cat when you see a stray or know of people who could use help and education. http://www.lovethatcat.com.

Kitten 2ullSizeRenderYou might know that PetSmart is involved in the adoption process in many cities across the US. They’ve teamed up with the ASPCA to work toward leaving no cat behind. Learn more about services in your area here: https://www.petsmartcharities.org.

Don’t just sit back and wait for someone else to come along and help a stray, injured, or abused cat or an out-of-control hoarding situation. Get involved. It’s easy and it’s the right thing to do.

Tomorrow, we’ll talk about cats in trouble and how someone came forward to help.

Mindful Monday – Cats That Defy Death

cookiepartyatperrys2011-041Today, I want to report on results of a research study on aging cats and share shocking stories of cats who return from the grave.

An article in Science Daily on aging cats caught my eye recently and I thought you might find it interesting, too. According to studies, an estimated that 20 percent of pet cats in America are 11 years or older. We all know that the new 50 is 30 and the new 70 is 50. Yes, humans are living longer and healthier than ever in history. Those of us who love our cats are thrilled to know that we’re seeing a similar trend toward longevity in cats. Here’s the story: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/07/160706114621.htm

And here’s a shocking story about a cat who was hit by a car and killed, only to return from the grave. http://abcnews.go.com/Lifestyle/zombie-cat-buried-cat-believed-dead-meows-back/story?id=28519513

This story reminds me of something that happened in my own family. My brother-in-law had a kitten who wasn’t thriving. After observing the baby cat for a several days, he and my father-in-law decided to put the poor, sickly creature out of its misery, so they put it into a plastic bag full of gas fumes. Ick. (You’d better believe I wasn’t there and I didn’t hear about this until it was over, or it wouldn’t have happened.) Well, they checked on the kitten a few times during the process and it was still moving. So they added gas to the bag. The next time they checked, the kitten had become so active, he’d wriggled himself onto the floor—yes, still inside the baggie and still alive. When they saw this, they decided the kitten wanted to live, so they gave him another chance and the little guy lived on for many years. Although there is a happy ending to this story, that was still an awful way to treat a sickly kitten.

Few of my cats over the years enjoyed longevity until Katy, a Himalayan I bought at a pet store. My beautiful Katy lived to be 17 and a half. We lost Max this year. We had found him and his siblings in our woodpile when they were very young kittens. Max grew into a big boy and he also lived to be over 17 years old.

Also this week, we’ll talk about cat-mobiles offering low-cost spay/neuter clinics; cats who found themselves in precarious situations; tips for keeping your cat out of the Christmas tree; the true dangers of ribbon, yarn and string for cats, and we’ll discuss whether cats have feelings or not.

Frivolous Friday – Frivolous Cats

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

If you enjoy cats…I mean a lot…you probably have at least a few cat-related items around your home. Perhaps people give you cat figurines, aprons and nightshirts with cats, dangly cat earrings and so forth. Among other things, I have a cat spoon rest in my kitchen, a wooden cat that fits over the door frame, a cat screen cleaner, a mouse pad with an adorable cat face, and even a cat nativity scene, which I’ll bring out for Christmas soon.

Today, I thought I’d share some frivolous cats that have come to my attention. You’ve seen pictures of the wiemerienar dogs dressed up. Well, here’s a site showing art featuring cats as historical figures. These works of art are charming as all get out. http://algo.fyi/ggiwvw

Here’s a collection of cats dressed for important occasions. https://images.search.yahoo.com/yhs/search?p=aristocrat+cats&fr=yhs-mozilla-100&hspart=mozilla&hsimp=yhs-100&imgurl=http%3A%2F%2Fi55.servimg.com%2Fu%2Ff55%2F18%2F59%2F18%2F68%2F8qlhcc10.jpg#id=4&iurl=http%3A%2F%2Fi55.servimg.com%2Fu%2Ff55%2F18%2F68%2F46%2F44%2F21244616.jpg&action=click

Thoughts for Thursday – Autographed Copies for Christmas

Picture-Purrfect-Christmas-cover-300Here are links to something special—autographed copies of the two books I recommend for holiday giving: A Picture-Purrfect Christmas and By Cat or By Crook.

A Picture-Purrfect Christmas is a spellbinding story of love, hope, and a child’s innocent Christmas dreams. When Savannah Ivey agrees to teach photography to a group of at-risk children, she doesn’t expect a sweet-spirited little crippled girl to steal her heart and become an important part of her family. Even Rags, the kleptomaniac cat, is captivated by the child named Marissa. When she goes missing, everyone, including Rags, experiences the pain of loss.

While this story involves some intense drama, it will also make you smile and even laugh out loud. Bring out the tissues for the beautiful ending. A Picture-Purrfect Christmas is one of those feel-good holiday stories you’ll want to read over and over again

By Cat or By Crook is the 20th in the Klepto Cat Mystery series. In this story, Irisbycat-cover-web

continues her refurbishing work at the grand old Kaiser home, but things aren’t going smoothly. Is she being stalked or is she simply spooked by what she hears at night kicking around in the attic? She certainly didn’t expect to hire gravediggers, nor did she anticipate the discovery of a large fortune amidst the chaos and mayhem at the old mobster hangout. Of course, Rags, the klepto cat, is on duty. He helps to reveal some decades-old family secrets and he finds a murderer’s calling card in the most unexpected place.

Order autographed copies by December 15 for Christmas giving and receive a packet of Klepto Cat Mystery note cards.
