Who We Are
Considered “a maven when it comes to counseling authors in the art of publishing and selling their books” 1 and “one of the most well-known writing gurus,” 2 Patricia Fry has been working with other freelance writers and authors for over two decades. She is a literary and manuscript consultant, an editor and a teacher. She can help you write a book with more publishing potential and she can guide you in preparing a more successful book proposal.
Patricia began writing for publication in 1973, when her three daughters were teenagers. While raising her girls, supporting them through their graduations, helping them plan their weddings and welcoming her grandchildren, she wrote only part-time. And she continued writing at every opportunity even after accepting a full-time job. In 1990, however, Patricia quit her job and began devoting all of her time to her writing career.
By then, Patricia had two books and hundreds of magazine articles to her credit. Since then, she has published 25 additional books and hundreds more articles. Her articles have appeared in nearly 300 publications including Writer’s Digest, PMA Independent, Writer’s Journal, The World and I, Entrepreneur, Mature Outlook, Cat Fancy, The Toastmaster, Woman’s Own, Woman’s World, Reminisce, Catholic Digest, Executive Update, Quarter Horse Journal, Kiwanis Magazine, Your Health, Pages, The Artist’s Magazine and many others.
Her published books represent an eclectic mix of subjects—from grandparenting and local history to youth mentoring and even how to present a Hawaiian luau. But her favorite topic remains writing and publishing. Having produced 10 books related to writing and publishing, Patricia’s hallmark title is, The Right Way to Write, Publish and Sell Your Book. This book, currently in its second printing, now features an accompanying workbook.
Patricia is the president of SPAWN (Small Publishers, Artists and Writers Network), a networking organization which she helped form in 1996. (http://www.spawn.org.) Currently, she writes the monthly SPAWN Market Update for the member area of the SPAWN Web site and responds to the many questions they get each year from members and visitors to this site.
Patricia also presents writing/publishing seminars and workshops throughout the U.S. having been a workshop leader/speaker for the Much Ado About Books event in Jacksonville, Florida; the National Association of Women Writers Conference in Arlington, Texas; the Meet Me In St. Louis Book Festival and Arts and Crafts Fair in St. Louis, Missouri (two years in a row); the Central Coast Book Festival and Writers’ Conference; the Northwest Regional Writers Association Conference in Seattle; the Pen Women’s Conference in Honolulu; the Wisconsin Regional Writers’ Conference in Janesville, Wisconsin; the San Diego State University Writers’ Conference in that city and she was the lead speaker at the SPAN Marketing Conference in San Francisco.
Additionally, Patricia has been a guest speaker multiple times for SPAWN’s three chapter meetings; the Book Publicists of Southern California; the San Luis Obispo Night Writers; the Pen Women of Southern California; the West Coast Author Premiere; the first and second annual Ventura Book Festival and Writers’ Conference and several other venues throughout Southern California. She has also attended the PMA Affiliate Retreat two years in a row in Redondo Beach, California and Chicago.
The highlight of Patricia’s extensive annual speaking tours was an all-expenses-paid trip to Dubai in 2006 where she spoke before 800 Toastmasters from throughout the Middle East at District 79's annual convention. (Read about her adventures in Dubai in her book, Once in a Lifetime, Adventures in Dubai. http://www.matilijapress.com/dubai.html.)
Patricia also teaches online classes on three topics: “How to Write a Successful Book Proposal,” “How to Establish a Career as a Freelance Article Writer” and “How to Successfully Self-Publish Your Book.”
