The Ojai Valley: An Illustrated History by
Patricia Fry. 2nd edition (completely revised). Matilija Press, 1999
(0-9612642-4-1) 358 pages. Extensive index. $19.95 The
Ojai Valley: An Illustrated History is the result of six years of intense
research and an additional fifteen years of history collecting. Within these
pages are thousands of little-known facts about every aspect of the Ojai
Valley, California, illustrated by over 150 photographs. This book
begins with the geology of the valley and tells about the earliest arts here.
The author captures all of Ojai's firsts: the first development attempt, the
first store, the first jail, the first train to Ojai and so forth. And she
profiles numerous early settlers and their contributions to this community. She
explores the original governing bodies here, the first clubs, the origin of
culture in this valley, the development of Ojai industry, water issues and so
forth. The last five chapters are dedicated to the many visitors to Ojai as
they tell about the town today.
