You ought to see some of the problems that occur when an author decides to tweak his or her story even just a bit. Often, they neglect to change all aspects of it and something is mistakenly left in or erroneously taken out\u2026<\/p>\n
And, despite the author\u2019s editorial diligence, he only knows what he knows and he will often overlook some serious editorial problems. <\/p>\n
What do you know about self-editing? Do you make some of the most common mistakes in your manuscript or are you a fairly savvy author? For example, you may not realize that<\/p>\n
\u2022\tIt is now one space between sentences\u2014not two.<\/p>\n
\u2022\tThe em-dash connects the two words. It does not dangle between them.<\/p>\n
\u2022\tThere is no apostrophe in \u201cthe 1970s.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u2022\tParent\u2019s indicates belonging to one parent.<\/p>\n
\u2022\tParents\u2019 indicates belonging to more than one parent. <\/p>\n
\u2022\tThan is used in comparisons\u2014\u201cTommy is taller than Bobby.\u201d <\/p>\n
\u2022\tThen has many meanings related to a point in time, progression of time, etc. <\/p>\n
\u2022\tYou can make your writing more interesting by varying the words you use.<\/p>\n
\u2022\tA sentence that is connected by two or more \u201cands\u201d is probably a run-on sentence. <\/p>\n
\u2022\tClarity is vital, yet muddy writing is way too common among new authors.<\/p>\n
\u2022\tFew authors recognize their own editorial weaknesses.<\/p>\n
\u2022\tAge should be indicated by numerals, most other numbers under 100 are written.<\/p>\n
