One factor, they say, is the pandemic. People adopted and bought and rescued pets to keep them company![\"\"](\"https:\/\/www.matilijapress.com\/catscapades\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/catorangetree-225x300.jpg\")
during the pandemic. Way too many of them have since returned to their former life and decided they can no longer care for the pet. Some cats have been returned to shelters, but many, countless cats have been turned out on the streets.<\/p>\n
Here\u2019s a poignant account of what\u2019s happening in a region of New York. Magnify this by thousands and it ![\"\"](\"https:\/\/www.matilijapress.com\/catscapades\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/cats-eating-225x300.jpg\")
makes for an even uglier picture and reality. Thankfully there are people watching out for the cats\u2014but not nearly the number that\u2019s needed. They can\u2019t be everywhere and tend to every cat and that\u2019s the sad reality.<\/p>\n
Did you know, for example, that 8 out of 10 kittens die ![\"\"](\"https:\/\/www.matilijapress.com\/catscapades\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_1744-300x225.jpg\")
in their first six months on the street. Even the savviest and sturdiest street cat lives an average of just 4 years. And folks, we can\u2019t adopt ourselves out of this predicament.<\/p>\n
