Olivia is actually a quiet cat unless she has something![\"\"](\"https:\/\/www.matilijapress.com\/catscapades\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/catFriendsRanch-225x300.jpg\")
to say, like, \u201cIt\u2019s three o\u2019clock in the afternoon, it\u2019s time for everyone to convene in the living room.\u201d She\u2019ll continue bugging us with her chatter until everyone is where she thinks they should be. Then she\u2019ll take a nap. Well, being the supervisor of her people is hard work.<\/p>\n
She has a different tone to let us know she\u2019s hungry. Sometimes she actually eats what we feed her. She uses her voice when she wants us to open a window for her ![\"\"](\"https:\/\/www.matilijapress.com\/catscapades\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/OliviaMouth-225x300.jpg\")
so she can feel the air and watch the birds and the cats as well as the neighbors walking by. And sometimes she carries on verbally when she\u2019s bored and she wants to engage in a game with us or just wants petting.<\/p>\n
I enjoy my conversations with Olivia. She usually starts it. She\u2019ll chirp what appears to be a greeting. I\u2019ll respond, \u201cI love you, too.\u201d Then the conversations continue with her chirps and peeps and mews. If I respond, she\u2019ll respond in kind. I notice that if I speak ![\"\"](\"https:\/\/www.matilijapress.com\/catscapades\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Oliviawaving-225x300.jpg\")
harshly to her, saying, \u201cNo, Olivia, now go away, I have to work.\u201d I\u2019ll get a sassy response. Yes, cats can be sassy.<\/p>\n
Then there are the times when we argue. She says, \u201cCome out of the office MEOW and pay attention to me.\u201d<\/p>\n
I say, \u201cGet up here in my lap or on my desk and I\u2019ll pet you while I work.\u201d Then the argument begins.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve probably heard at least some of your cat\u2019s sounds\u2014the chattering she does when she sees a bird out the window, the mew-mew sound she makes when she wants her kibbles bowl filled, the meeoooowww she emits when she wants what she wants\u2014outside, petting, a treat, or something else. Cats can cry, sound mournful, complain, banter happily, murmur sweet things while being petted, and snarl, yell, screech, sass\u2014maybe even swear. Some of my favorite sounds are Olivia\u2019s chirps. They sound happy to me.<\/p>\n
I saw an ap once that you could use to decipher your cat\u2019s tones. They claimed that you could record the cat and the ap would tell you exactly what she\u2019s saying. I have to wonder, do we really want to know what the cat\u2019s actually telling us?<\/p>\n
