I posted this in March of 2009\u2014yes, a dozen years ago. There\u2019s nothing quite as comforting and joyful as hugging or petting a cat. Experts say that just being around a cat can lower your blood pressure. That\u2019s one reason why hundreds of business owners throughout the world have felines on their staff. Trina\u2019s site features 461 shop cats (now 470)\u2014that is, cats that live either full or part time at a place of business. You never know when you will come back from lunch and find a soundly sleeping tabby curled up in your office chair or holding down the invoices in your out box. There\u2019s a resident cat at the local feed store and there\u2019s one working at our outdoor bookstore.<\/p>\n<p>I have two furry, purry assistants in my <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-998\" src=\"https:\/\/www.matilijapress.com\/catscapades\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0592-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.matilijapress.com\/catscapades\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0592-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.matilijapress.com\/catscapades\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0592-768x575.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.matilijapress.com\/catscapades\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0592-500x375.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>home office. Max is raccoon-like in size and shape\u2014you know the type? He\u2019s white with shades of brown markings and perfectly round bright-blue eyes. He\u2019s formerly feral, however, and his pupils are often hugely <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1002\" src=\"https:\/\/www.matilijapress.com\/catscapades\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IM000238-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.matilijapress.com\/catscapades\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IM000238-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.matilijapress.com\/catscapades\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IM000238-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.matilijapress.com\/catscapades\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IM000238-375x500.jpg 375w, https:\/\/www.matilijapress.com\/catscapades\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IM000238.jpg 1704w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>dilated, so his eye color doesn\u2019t always show well in photos. She is the paper shredder. If only I could teach her to be more discriminating as to which papers she\u2019s shredding. Sigh. She particularly likes to sneak off with Post-it notes with important dates, phone numbers, etc. And I mean she \u201csneaks.\u201d If you see a gentle motion out of the corner of your eye heading toward the office door, you pretty much know that Sophie has confiscated a slip of paper and is stealthily on her way to render it useless. She still hasn\u2019t learned which ones are ours and which ones are hers. Sophie was also rescued. Her story and photos of her retrieving a fax are included in the Catscapades book.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone, upon hearing about this new book of true cat stories, ask me if I know about Dewey, the library cat. I sure do. I was among the many who wrote about Dewey while he was alive. Of course, I read Myron\u2019s recent book about his life as a library cat.
