Just look at the array of colors in their fur and some of them certainly strut their stuff.<\/p>\n<p>Calico is not a breed, but a color. You\u2019ll find tri-color cats in some cat breeds and whether the calico is a purebred Persian or born to a feral mom, tri-color cats are thought to have strong personalities. They\u2019re generally smart, affectionate, and creative\u2014yes, they can be a handful.<\/p>\n<p>So what determines a calico? Over 99 percent of calico <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3184\" src=\"https:\/\/www.matilijapress.com\/catscapades\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Mooniebirdfeeders-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.matilijapress.com\/catscapades\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Mooniebirdfeeders-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.matilijapress.com\/catscapades\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Mooniebirdfeeders-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.matilijapress.com\/catscapades\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Mooniebirdfeeders.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>cats are female. A male calico is rare, indeed. I\u2019ve never met one. A calico is 25-75 percent white with patches of black and orange or grey and cream.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s the standard calico with bold patches; the dilute calico; the cabby with patches of tabby markings; and some even have tortie patches. Our kitten, Olivia, has a bold calico patched pattern, along with patches of tabby stripes and tortie patches. So does that make her a calitorby?<\/p>\n<p>The calico cat is thought to have originated in Egypt and they have been worshiped over the years. The Egyptians worshiped them and in Japan they\u2019re considered to bring good fortune. We\u2019ve all seen the calico cat figurine clutching a gold coin and waving in<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.matilijapress.com\/catscapades\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/oliviajapancat-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.matilijapress.com\/catscapades\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/oliviajapancat-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.matilijapress.com\/catscapades\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/oliviajapancat-375x500.jpg 375w, https:\/\/www.matilijapress.com\/catscapades\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/oliviajapancat.jpg 406w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/> Asian-owned businesses and for sale among Asian curios.<\/p>\n<p>In America, the calico was chosen as the state cat of Maryland. Only two other states have state cats: Maine (the Maine coon) and Massachusetts (the tabby).<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a weird fact.
